November’s Product of the Month:
School Cheeseburger

One of the most popular lunch menu items is the cheeseburger.   Many times when we hear the word “Cheeseburger”  we think of  unhealthy fast food.  Some cafeteria menu items, while they look and taste similar to fast food counterparts, are much healthier versions.   When we compare the  school cheeseburger to popular national chain versions, we see that the school cheeseburger has considerably less calories, fat and saturated fat.  It also has less cholesterol and sodium and provides more vitamin A.

The school cheeseburger starts with lean, USDA-inspected ground beef, grilled to perfection and topped with reduced fat American cheese.  We offer a choice of condiments,  including either reduced fat or fat free mayonnaise—an option that is rarely, if ever,  provided at most fast food establishments.  Along with the healthier cheeseburger, students are also offered baked oven fries at elementary and middle school (1/2 cup portion),  a sandwich salad, fresh fruit and low fat milk.  When compared with the usual “combo meals” offered at fast food establishments, the school cheeseburger lunch is a much healthier choice.  Next time your child says they want to eat lunch at school, remember that good nutrition is served here!
