Below you will find a comparison of our sub sandwiches served at middle and high schools and those served at different local fast food establishments. As the chart indicates, the IISD Turkey Combo Sub has 42% less calories than the Arby’s Turkey sub, 62% less calories from fat, 62% less fat grams, 43% less saturated fat, 22% less sodium and 19% less carbohydrates. That is quite a significant difference. When we think of Subway’s Restaurant, we conjure up an image of health and nutrition and all those pounds just melting away if we make Subway’s sandwiches our staple meal. Well, even when compared to the Subway cold cut combo sandwich, our sub sandwich has considerably fewer calories, calories from fat, total fat, saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol. Some of the subs listed below have more fat and calories than a large order of French fries or than a quarter pounder with cheese! Some ways to help cut down on fat and calories is to examine the menu carefully, ask for nutrition information if available and order your sub without cheese. Many restaurants have heart healthy choices denoted on their menu. The dressing and condiments can also add a significant amount of calories and fat --- opt for mustard or a little oil and vinegar which will add zip to your sandwich without adding much calories or saturated fats. If available, have a veggie sub --- they pack the flavor, crunch and fiber, without the added calories and fat. Do not be mislead, not all subs are created equal - have a school sub instead!
Sub Sandwiches include meat, American cheese and vegetables. Dressings or condiments are not included in nutrition information. *Nutrition information for Arby’s and Subway sandwiches taken from their respective websites. |
