Judy Hammond Memorial Athletic Scholarship
Dedication
The Irving Schools Foundation (ISF) honored the memory of Judy Hammond by dedicating an endowed scholarship established in her name on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at the Irving Independent School District Administration building.
Irving Schools Foundation President Diana Pfaff, Retired Irving Independent School District (IISD) Athletic Director Don Poe, IISD Athletic Director Joe Barnett, Carey Christenberry of Nimitz High School, IISD Board President Randy Stipes and Assistant Athletic Director Mike Sartor all participated in the scholarship dedication program which included over 100 guests.
Christenberry read his poem “In honor of Judy Hammond” which he wrote for the dedication ceremony. The IISD Athletic Office presented Judy’s three children with framed copies of the poem.
Judy’s name was inscribed on the Perpetual Giving Tree sculpture, signifying the perpetual nature of her endowed scholarship. The first Judy Hammond Memorial Athletic Scholarship will be awarded at the 20th Anniversary Breakfast with the Stars event on April 5.
A reception for her family, friends and all the donors to the scholarship was held prior to the ceremony. Refreshments were donated by ISF Board Members and Sam’s Club.
Judy was associated with Irving schools in some capacity for twenty-eight years. In 1987, Judy became Athletic Secretary. During her 18 years in the athletic office, she worked for three different athletic directors. She retired in June 2005.
The highlight of Judy’s life was her family. She was a wife of 36 years, the mother of three children and grandmother of seven.
The Irving Schools Foundation and the IISD Athletic Office will continue to raise funds for the Judy Hammond Memorial Athletic Scholarship to fund an additional scholarship so that 2 scholarships can be awarded in 2008. A memorial golf tournament will be held on Saturday, March 17 at Riverchase Golf Club. Cost is $100 per player and includes lunch and dinner. Registration and sponsor information is available at the IISD Athletic Office; contact Beth Hindman at 972-600-5215.
