2009 Breakfast with the Stars

The Irving Schools Foundation held its 22nd annual Breakfast with the Stars event Monday, April 23rd. Over 520 students, parents, administrators, business and community members attended the event held at the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas. Nissan North America was the Constellation (title) sponsor for the sixth time this year and presented a check in the amount of $10,000 to ISF President, Phil Sims. Several Nissan North America employees joined the two Nissan scholarship recipients, Lisbeth Valdez (awarded the Nissan North America scholarship), and Rachel Estes (awarded the Nissan-Irving Professional Firefighters 911 Memorial scholarship), and their families, for the breakfast celebration.

A total of 86 Irving ISD students were recognized with scholarships. Four new scholarships were awarded included: Barbara Cardwell Future of Education Scholarship; Betty and Ben Carpenter Memorial Scholarship; Inelda Alaniz Scholarship; and Kenneth Yancey Memorial Scholarship. During the ceremony, each student was recognized and a small portion of their application was shared with the audience by emcee, John McCaa of WFAA channel 8. This was John McCaa’s seventh year to emcee for this event.

In addition to the scholarships, four community members were also named 2009 Sustainer and Fellows of the ISF. To be named a Sustainer of the Foundation, a $5,000 donation is made to the general endowment in honor of an individual or individuals. To be named a Fellow of the Foundation, a $1000 donation is made to the general endowment in honor of an individual or individuals. The 2009 Fellows that were recognized included Mayor Herbert A. Gears, Jack Singley, Chuck Kirk, and Sharon Requinton Pfaff. Friends and family of all individuals were in attendance to share in the recognition.

The annual Breakfast with the Stars event is the Irving Schools Foundation’s major fundraiser of the year. $85,000 in funds was raised, which will enable the Foundation to continue its mission of supporting students and teachers in the IISD.
