Senior Awards Ceremony

A Senior Award Ceremony will be held in the MacArthur High School auditorium on May 30th at 9:15 a.m.  Attached is a list of Seniors who will be recognized during this ceremony.

Arbor Day Tree Planting
In the last year MacArthur High School has lost 3 trees on the side of the school facing MacArthur Boulevard. The most recent loss was during the bad storms that rolled through this April.  In an attempt to restore some of the beauty that trees bring to the campus, student council planted a tree on Arbor Day in honor of the MacArthur teachers, who help students build strong roots.

MacArthur Chapter of SADD
On Saturday, April 19, student members of the MacArthur chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) participated in “Walk Like MADD” a 5K fun walk to raise money and awareness of MADD’s campaign to eliminate drunk driving in our community. 19 students and sponsor Jacqueline Cowen, a French teacher at MacArthur, participated in the walk.

MacArthur Academic Decathlon Team Recognized
The MacArthur Academic Decathlon students, coaches and principal were recognized for their participation in the Academic Decathlon program by the IISD Board of Trustees, Monday, April 21. MacArthur High School placed seventh in the regional meet.   Team members were introduced by their coaches and principal, who also addressed the board in describing the team’s hard work and dedication.

Graduate Job Fair
Irving ISD Partnerships in Education wants to invite you to the first ever Graduate Job Fair to be held on May 15th at the South MacArthur Church of Christ.  Over 25 companies are registered to be there for you to meet (see list).  Sponsors include: Irving ISD, Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce, Irving Public Library, Irving Cares and Urban League of Greater Dallas.  For more information contact:  Thelma R. Cantu at tcantu@irvingisd.net or 972.215.5017.

All the students who think that they have a perfect attendance for this year (and have not been called down to the attendance office), we need you to please come forward and allow us time to correct any discrepancies that have occurred. We certainly want all the students that deserve a perfect attendance award to receive it.

MacArthur Choir Spring
The MacArthur choir will be presenting their Spring Show entitled "MHX Where Performance Meets Technology" on Thursday May 8, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the MacArthur Auditorium.  Admission is $5 for adults and kids/students are free.

After Prom Ticket Sales
Sold during lunch!  (April 9, April 16, May 5, May 6 and May 7)  The Senior Spectacular at SPEED ZONE!  You do not have to attend prom to come, but you must be a MAC Senior.  You may bring a date to the event as well!  Activities will include:  Racing, Dragster Cars, Miniature Golf, Video Games, Casino Games, Caricature Portraits, Pizza, Drinks and More!  MAC Seniors will have the chance to win LOTS of GREAT PRIZES such as:  laptops, IPODS, TVs, stereos, digital cameras, gift certificates, luggage and more!

Ballot Information
All students will be voting on Class Favorites and Mr. and Miss School Spirit on Tuesday through their social studies classes.  In addition, seniors will be voting on Prom King and Queen.  Click the appropriate grade level link for voting ballot information.

Drunk Goggles Simulate Drinking Impairment
Officer Kaloi visited the Health classes ... to talk about the impairment that occurs when students drink.  After a short video and some instruction, students were taken in to the hallway to see the effects of drinking on their ability to do the easiest things, like walking.  All students had the chance to try on “drunk goggles” and then try to walk a yellow line.  The point was driven home that drinking affects one more than they might think.

StudentConnection Pilot
(Pilot for:
  MacArthur, Lamar, Gilbert, and Townsell) 
This year we are piloting the StudentConnection for the 4 campuses above where students can login to the Irving ISD GradeSpeed system and be able to view their grades, attendance, etc.  Upon successful completion of this pilot, Irving ISD hopes to be able to open this service to more schools.

TAKS Testing Schedule
TAKS testing will take place Tuesday, April 29 through Friday, May 2.  Testing will be held from 8:15-12:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and from 8:15-11:30 on Friday.  MacArthur will be on a three lunch schedule and afternoon classes will be scheduled for different periods each day.  Check the schedule provided here.

Recycling Drive
MacArthur High School is sponsoring a recycling drive to raise funds.  Computers, cell phones, print cartridges, toner cartridges, and more can be recycled by bringing them to the school (room 121) and the school will get the funds for the materials. The drive runs through April 30.   If you have questions, contact Amber Watts,

Credit by Examination
Credit by Examination Application(April 25 Deadline)  Credit by Exam can allow students to earn credit for courses they have taken but not passed ... or allow students to advance to courses that challenge them without having to take courses that cover information they already know...

Voter Registration Drive
The MacArthur Student Council held a voters registration drive April 3rd and 4th during all lunches.  With the Presidential elections just around the corner, students were eager to go by the table manned by the Southwest Voters Registration Education Project and fill out the necessary forms.

Technology Media Fair Winners
MacArthur High School students brought home 18 ribbons in 8 different categories from the Irving ISD Technology Media Fair open house held on January 31.  Five students won first place awards.  Congratulations to all these award winners!

Senior Citizen Country & Western Dance Sponsored
MacArthur
High School student council, along with Irving, Nimitz and the Academy sponsored a senior citizen Country and Western Dance on Tuesday, March 11 at the heritage Senior Center.  This is the third year that the student councils have gotten together to sponsor this event.

First Bytes Summer Computer Science Camp
The Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin will host First Bytes Version 6.0 Summer Computer Science Camp – a free one-week residential program for high school girls designed to dispel myths about computer science and intrigue young women with the potential of computing and the excitement of problem solving.

Senior Rings and Caps & Gowns
(Attention seniors) Jostens will be on campus taking announcement and cap and gown payments and orders on Wednesday, February 13. If you have not purchased your class ring, you can order your ring with your announcement and cap and gown order with no additional deposit.

(Attention juniors) If you have not yet purchased your class ring, you can order it Wednesday,  February 13 with only a $50 deposit. If you have already placed an order you can pick up your ring or make a payment on your ring at this time.

Send a Valentine Gram!

Class of 2010 will be selling Valentine grams during all 4 lunches (February 7-8 & 11-13).  Lollipop grams will be sold for $1 and Bear grams for $3.  They will be sent out on Valentine’s day during 4th period to recipient.

Go Red for Women Day

Students:  Friday, February 1 is national Go Red for Women day.  This is a movement dedicated to raising awareness of heart disease in women.  Join us in this national awareness day by wearing RED.  Friday is spirit day on campus so this will be easy.  Just wear something red (whether it’s a shirt, pants, shoes, jewelry, or whatever) to show your support for women and the fight against heart disease.

College Planning Meeting
There is a college planning meeting at Irving High School on Tuesday, January 29 at 6:30 pm.  This meeting is for any 8th or 9th grade student (and their parents) who want to get a head start on planning for college.  There will also be a Spanish session.

Summer Activity Fair
The Hurst-Euless-Bedford, Birdville, and Keller ISD are joining together to sponsor a Summer Activity Fair presenting summer opportunities for elementary and secondary students.  There will be over a dozen different booths representing a variety of educational and artistic summer camps in the area.  Although the gifted and talented associations sponsor this event, MOST of the camps are open to the general public.  Some of the camps offer scholarships based upon financial need.

Friday Nite Live Teen Talent Competition
The Irving Parks and Recreation’s Friday Nite Live Teen Talent Competition will be on Friday, January 25th.. Do not miss Mac students: Adam Stailey, Sam Burgess, Dustin Rogers, Eliot Lopez, Rachel Nemec, Raven Garcia, Bryan Cosion, Aldo Gonzalez, Trey Turner, Kenneth Black, Andrew Jarboe, Bhumi Patel, Ke Ke Ransfer, Hunter Toon, Mac Jennings and Chirs Qilkes.   They will be competing for first place tonight at the Irving Arts Center at 7.

Academic Decathlon 2008
Congratulations to the MacArthur Academic Decathlon team members.  They came in seventh in the district competition held January 18-19, 2008 at MacArthur High School.  This is a significant performance among tough competition and they are already gearing up for next year!
