Summer Camps for High School Students

A list of ten summer camps for high school students has been prepared by the MacArthur counseling department.  These are great opportunities for students ... and a great way to spend your summer!

  1. Annual Lone Star Scholars Academy at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Tx – liberal arts curriculum including biology and media studies.  Two sessions:  6/15-21 and 6/22-28.  Applications are online at www.tlu.edu/lssa or in the Counseling Office. 

  2. TCU High School Investor Challenge – for students entering their senior year of high school who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and an interest in investing in the stock market.  Held June 15-20.  Applications are online at www.cfs.tcu.edu.

  3. Louisiana Scholastic Journalism Institute at LSU – for students and advisors involved in media – publications and broadcasts.  Held June 8-13.  Info online at www.manship.lsu.edu under Special Programs and look for the LSJI link.

  4. AFS Intercultural Programs (exchange student program) – helps students gain invaluable international experience, learn a language, do community service and stand out on college applications.  AFS offers summer, semester and year long programs.  Go to www.usa.afs.org for more info.

  5. The University of Oklahoma Field Studies Summer Academy – provides students the opportunity to study and research organisms in their natural habitats.  For students entering their junior or senior year I the fall.  Deadline to apply is 4/30/08.  Applications are in the Counseling Office or online at http://youth.ou.edu.

  6. Camp ARCH, College of Architecture at Texas A & M – for students that have completed grades 9th – 12th who want to experience the professions of  Architect, Landscape Architect, Constructor and Visual Designer.  The camp is from July 13-19.  Applications are in the Counseling Office and online at http://archone.tamu.edu/College/Academics/CampArch.

  7. PROMYS, Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists at Boston University – will offer an intensive experience in creative mathematical exploration to ambitious high school students with an exceptionally strong interest in math from June 29-August 9.  Applications are online at www.promys.org.

  8. Summer Pre-College Programs at Carnegie Mellon – for students that will be a junior or a senior want to get a jump start on preparing for college.  It is June 28-August 8.  Apply online at www.cmu.edu/enrollment/pre-college.  Deadline to apply is May 1st.

  9. Renaissance Scholars Program at Baylor University – for current high school juniors interested in an integrated introduction to topics in engineering/technology with complimentary readings in history, art, literature, philosophy and theology.  Mention the name of your high school and get a $500 scholarship to the program.  Apply online at www.baylor.edu/renaissancesscholar.
