Title: Surrounded by "Squares"

Category: original art
Grade Level: 11-12
Description: To create this 3d Render, I used a 3D Animation software called Blender. It is a pretty well known software that is free to the public and performs like professional software, but without the price tag. There were many different things that had to happen to create this piece. I figured out my design and created the box along with the UV Sphere. Then I added different planes to the inside of the square in which I applied the texture (Checkerboard pattern). Working with the Ray effects, lighting, shadows, colors, reflection, angles, camera view, scaling, and flipping created what you see. I used a lot of bouncing light and reflection to get the image. Though the image looks complex, its really simple. The walls are set as mirrors and the the floor is the only thing that has the checkerboard patter. There is actually only one ball. I created this project because for one I love 3D rendering and Animation so I felt that it was something that I need to do for the contest. One thing i learned the most was different ways of working with light and how it reflects off surfaces and also techniques for getting that Render that I feel captures what my intent was. I would like others to learn that you don't have to have high dollar software to make something like I did. Sometime the free ones are just as good and sometimes better. Picture Meaning: The balls represent a particular person or group if you may, and the squares around them are everyone else. Everything around us reflects what kind of people we are. Notice the formation the circles make, a square. Although they are of different physical shape, they conform to blend in with everyone around them. The mirror effect is ment to show that all the things around us, we take in, and from our own point of view we show it off in another aspect. Now the balls represent being different internally. Things seem to be nothing but straight lines and shades on the outside, but inside the balls, things are stretched and skewed and have character. Although we try and blend in with society, we are different in our own ways. Everything from shapes, size and the way we see things. Diversity is the main concept of my piece.

Wow! Impressive use of 3-D software. Interesting title that reflects the theme of the art. The theme of individualism is something everyone can relate to and the explanation was clear. The technical process was explained step-by step. Outstanding and evocative.

I loved the flow of this piece with its precision, its artistic flair, and its total originality. Making it as a Black and White project gives it an additional creative presentation.

This presentation is excellent. The flow of the graphics keeps the viewers eyes constantly moving over the picture. Its precision and representation of the squares offers much depth to the interpretation. The use of black and white supports the artistic presentation.
