| Description: This design is a complete entry into each of our minds because it’s an expression of our creativity. With elaborate use of the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator, the simple sketch came to life within minutes; we all contributed equally to taking it from a sketch to making it a final product. It first started as a sketch that was scanned and then was opened through Illustrator. We separated each section into different layers to make it a less complex job. Starting off with the body, we outlined her head, to her dress, and on to her feet. We created her shoes and socks with the knife tool which allows us to cut the object into more than one piece. The reality of her socks being bunched up was created with another trusty paint brush, the Pencil Thin. We outlined the figures with precision and then filled them in with colors that stood out and are eye catching. We really wanted to grasp the concept of the girl day dreaming about this crazy circus that gives this idea of how she wants her life to be: thought provoking and interesting. So we ended up using vibrant hues like oranges and cyan to set off this cartoon look of her inner thoughts. Creating the inside of her head was rather difficult because there are so many small pieces like the miniature people and the brain with its veins; however the job was completed with the pen tool and fill bucket. Small details like her drool were created easily with the Dark Ink Wash paint brush. We added the veins to her brain with clever usage of the Pencil Thin paint brush. The pattern of her dress was made with a default pattern swatch on Illustrator. The girl’s hair was traced on as well from the sketch, but some of the hair was drawn free handed. To make her droopy eyed look we drew one eye, then copied it, and then closed off the anchor points so it was one full shape. We added a blue circle on top of that to make an iris. When we finished with one eye, we simply copied it and reflected it to put on the other side of her face. This design was inspired by a class warm-up called the Idea Book Assignment, which we do every day in our Advertising and Design class at the Academy. Each day there is a different idea book that we draw, or write something over. “I Made a Blank Stare Over this T-Shirt” is a product of one of those daily warm-ups that we decided to enhance and submit as our project for the Media Fair. The girl in our design is day dreaming about what her life would be like joining the circus because she doesn’t like her life as it is now and the system of society. All work was created from imagination scratch. |

Very imaginative, great attention to details, especially the trapeze artists. I wasn't sure about the intended purpose of your design--for a t-shirt? |

It sounds like working in a group is a great way to learn from each other and increase the creativity of the group. Together you all put a lot of thought and planning into this project and it all works well. The picture is intriging, but the overall purpose is undefined. Next time, I would suggest starting with an end product in mind and designing the artwork to fit a definite purpose. |
