Lesson Description
All Men Are Created Equal (Night) Students will analyze a speech, find articles related to the theme of the speech, and create a multimedia presentation.
Using Wikis to Catalog Protest Songs - (To Kill a Mockingbird) Over the years, protest songs have served as a means to combat social ills. These songs cover a wide array of topics, including but not limited to the following: racism, sexism, poverty, imperialism, environmental degradation, war, globalization, and homophobia. In 2005, hip-hop artist Kanye West released the single “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” to bring attention to the issue of conflict diamonds. In this lesson, students research and analyze contemporary and historic protest songs and then as a class catalog their findings in a wiki.
Night Final Project Students will be using presentation software, Windows Movie Maker, and video cameras to create a project that exemplifies their learning of both historical events of the Holocaust, as well as the memoir, Night.
Animal Farm Anticipation Guide By doing internet research, the students will provide defense of their opinions by completing an anticipation guide for Animal Farm.
Travel Brochure: Highlighting the Setting of a Story Imagine the images and detailed descriptions of the places depicted in a book you’ve read recently—whether a far-away land, a historical location, or a city just like the one you live in. Settings transport readers to these places, inviting them to consider what it would be like to visit these locations personally. This lesson plan takes that imaginary tourism one step further by asking students to create a travel brochure for a location in a text that they have read. The activity requires students to think about and collect the details mentioned in the text that should be highlighted and conduct additional research on the location as they design their own brochures. This lesson plan uses Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko as the example; however, any text in any genre would work well.
Night Presentation Students will create a presentation that emphasizes Eliezer's characterization and the impact of the book on readers.
Holocaust Journal The student will independently research victims and aggressors during the Holocaust. Writing from the point of view of the person they research, the student will write a 1-2 page journal entry about a day in the subject's life.
Night Literary Elements In small groups, the students will use what they've learned throughout the unit to teach literary elements in Night.
