Instructional Design

One of the keys to good classroom management in a one to one classroom is acknowledging that there is no "magic button" technology solution that will ensure laptops are used appropriately.  Traditional discipline is only one small part of the puzzle.  Effective instruction is even more important.

Pieces of the Puzzle::

Instructional Design - Lessons need to be designed to take advantage of the capabilities of wireless laptops. Student centered learning, higher level thinking, cooperative learning, and layered curriculum strategies all flourish in this environment.
Student perceived relevance - Students must see why the work they are doing is important to them.  The connection laptops give them to the world is especially helpful in designing real life activities.
Student responsibility - Students should be educated to take care of their laptops.  A sense of ownership in the program is important in a successful implementation.
Teacher watchfulness - Teachers should try to be aware of what students are doing in their classes, but they will have to give up a little bit of control over the learning process.  Schools need to pick their battles carefully.
