Spellers Compete on Live TV, Advance to County Bee

Three Irving ISD students earned the right to compete in the Dallas County Spelling Bee when they won bees for their high school zones held January 18-20 at the IISD Administration Building.  The bees were broadcast live on IISD’s cable channel 76. The spelling champions are listed below along with the second-place finishers, who will serve as alternates for the county bee:

  • Irving High School Zone:
    Michael Simmons, a fifth grade student at Lively Elementary School.
    (Runner-up: Alvin Nguyen, sixth grade, Austin Middle School)

  • MacArthur High School Zone:
    Chibueze Umeakuana, a fifth grade student at Lee Elementary School.
    (Runner-up: David Mendez, fourth grade, Brandenburg Elementary School)

  • Nimitz High School Zone:
    Parth Shah, an eighth grade student at Lamar Middle School.
    (Runner-up: Alan Cuellar, fifth grade, Schulze Elementary School)
