Food Service Zaps Trans
Fats
New
for 2010, the IISD Food Service Department reduced trans fats by
switching from a regular margarine product to a trans fat free margarine
product. The margarine used previously by the department had 3 grams of
trans fat, per 1 tablespoon serving. The new “zero grams of trans fats”
margarine has exactly zero grams of trans fats per 1 tablespoon
serving. Both margarines are cholesterol free, as well. Margarine
is used by the IISD Food Service Department as an ingredient in baking
and cooking various items, as a flavoring for some vegetables, and
placed on top of some bread items, such as toast. |

Irving ISD Designing Net Zero Middle School
Since
identifying the need for an eighth middle school, Irving ISD
administrators are designing the “net zero” concept for the new
facility. A net zero energy building is one that produces as much
energy as it consumes. Through efficiency technologies and on-site power

Scott Layne, assistant superintendent for support services, the
construction of a net-zero building helps reverse negative trends
associated with climate change. Layne said the building could be

functional environment. The committee’s charge, then, is
to develop a plan to address district playgrounds, so
that the outcome will be functional, uniform play areas
throughout the district. |
