New Auditorium at Jack E. Singley Academy
Plays, choir performances, and a variety of other events now take place at the Jack E. Singley Academy in Irving, now that the construction on their auditorium has been completed.

Irving ISD Middle School One-Act Play Festival
(Saturday, November 21, 2009)  You are invited to attend the Irving ISD Middle School One-Act Play Festival to be held at Nimitz High School on Saturday, November 21, 2009.   Admission is free.   Performing will be Travis Middle School (at 9:00 am), Houston Middle School (at 10:15 am), Lamar Middle School (at 11:30 am), Bowie Middle School (at 1:30 pm), de Zavala Middle School (at 2:45 pm) and Crockett Middle School (at 4:00 pm).
Scholarships, Scholarships, Scholarships!!!
Parents of Seniors, graduating from high school is an exciting time and Irving Schools foundation is very proud of your students accomplishments.  This year, the Foundation is awarding 94 scholarships totaling close to $150,000 in honor or memory of many very special people.  NOW is the time to apply online for these scholarships ... the deadline to apply is January 8, 2010.  All applications must be submitted online through the website, however transcripts and any other attachments that cannot be scanned must be hand delivered to your counselor.  APPLY NOW!
DRAFT 2010-2011 School Calendar
Link to Proposed Calendar InformationAttached for review, distribution and discussion with staff, parents and community members is a proposed DRAFT 2010-2011 school calendar.  The calendar is a result of preliminary discussion with the Board of Trustees during Noon Work Sessions and is to be release for additional input.

1:1 Laptop Symposium
Laptops in the classroom ... Irving ISD and a number of other districts across the nation have doing it for a few years now.  For two days these technological trend setters got together to discuss what is next for our digital students.  This year Irving ISD was the host of the 1:1 Symposium at Singley Academy. 

Citizens Review Committee for Textbook Adoption
(Interested in being on the Citizen Review Committee for the upcoming textbook adoption?)  The district will soon be reviewing textbooks for selection on Proclamation 2010.  As part of the process, parents are welcome to review the books as well. While any parent may review and provide input, there is a committee of 5 to 11 citizens of Irving who serve on the Citizens Review Committee.  A committee member would be expected to attend meetings on specific dates (see list).  If you’d be interested in serving on this committee, please contact Lea Bailey at 972-600-4820 or lbailey@irvingisd.net by November 20, 2009.
Project Tomorrow: Speak Up Survey
Speak Up, a national online research project facilitated by Project Tomorrow, gives individuals the opportunity to share their viewpoints about key educational issues. Each year, findings are summarized and shared with national and state policy makers. Participating schools and districts can access their data online, free-of-charge.   We value your opinions so take the time to complete your Speak Up Survey!

Wall of Honor
Stipes Elementary School honors veterans with its Wall of Honor.  Photos were collected from staff and students of military veterans to post on the wall.  The Wall of Honor helps emphasize and teach students about Veterans' Day.

Strong Kids Videos
Dads, moms, and their kids talking about issues like drug abuse is the focus of a new video series called Strong Kids - Strong Schools produced by Irving ISD's Parent/Student Services.  To view the video collection in English or Spanish, go to: www.irvingisd.net/parentstudentservices/strongfathers1.htm.

Intermediate Sign Language Class
Intermediate Sign Language Class will be offered starting January 25th on Monday nights.  Classes will be held at Britain Elementary School and are free to families of deaf students, $10 for district employees, and $20 for all others.  You do not need to pre-register ... come to the first class and register then.

Information about Special Diets and Peanut/Tree Nut Allergies
If your child is in need of Special Dietary Modifications, please be aware that signed doctor’s order must be submitted to the school nurse or the IISD Food Service Department in order for dietary modifications to be made.  A new doctor’s order must be submitted Each School Year.  For more information please call 972.600.6918.  Food Allergies:  Although the Irving Independent School District’s cafeterias do not serve peanut products at any Early Childhood or Elementary Schools, many of the foods served in our cafeterias are made in production facilities and commercial food manufacturing plants where peanut and tree nut products are processed.  We cannot guarantee...

Elliott Recycling Award
Its the first Arbor Day celebration in the city of Irving, and Elliott Elementary School was presented with an award from the City of Irving's Park and Recreation Department for doing the most recycling of any of the schools in the city.  After recycling 87, 870 pounds of paper the city has award the school by planting a 2 1/2 inch red oak on the school grounds.

5th Annual Craft Fair
Please Join the Academy Class of 2010 for the 5th Annual Craft Fair to be held at the Jack E. Singley Academy on December 12, 2009 from 9 am until 4 pm.  There will be lots of shopping, a silent auction, and our very own Santa. Come and have your child’s picture taken with Santa. Santa will be available from 10:00 am -12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.  If you are interested in being a vendor at the Craft Fair,  contact Suzanne McFarland at ahscraftfair@irvingisd.net or 972-600-5300.

Soy Milk Offered as Non-Dairy Milk Substitute
(Early Childhood and Elementary) In response to a recent policy change by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Irving ISD’s Food Service Department is modifying its practice of offering substitute beverages to students who cannot consume fluid cow’s milk.  In accordance with the policy change, the IISD Food Service Department will offer soy milk as a non-dairy milk substitute for those students whose documented medical condition does not allow the consumption of cow’s milk at: (1) breakfast and lunch at the Early Childhood Schools and (2) breakfast at "Breakfast in the Classroom" Elementary Schools.

"Baylor Medical Center of Irving does give back to its community," says Joe Moreno, principal at Bowie Middle School.  Baylor Medical Center has been a partner in education with Bowie for years.  A new re-dedication ceremony was held now that Baylor Medical has new leadership and new plans for their partnership with Bowie.

Irving ISD Security: Security Plan, 2009-2010

Pat Lamb)  Over the last several years, I have sought to keep you informed of security matters through an annual updated letter.  I truly feel that as parents and students of our District, you have a right to know the steps we are taking to provide a safe, secure, and orderly environment within our schools.  Like you, I have watched the frightening images of violence in schools through the lens of media coverage; and, like you, I am concerned as a parent when I see innocence violated by those who would seek to cause harm to others.  Please know that we give ourselves to the matter of providing safety and security to the students, staff, and visitors of our District; we constantly strive to improve, to learn of new methods, to train for the emergencies we hope never to occur.  And now, instead of looking over the horizon to the potential for violence, we find concern for the health of our children in the form of the H1N1 flu.  Indeed, the threat to our students and staff is broad and varied ...(read more)

Meal Accounts now Accepted at Ala Carte Lines
(Secondary Schools)  Thanks to an upgrade in technology equipment, all Express Lines and cash-only concepts (found in secondary schools) now accept funds from student meal accounts, including funds deposited via ParentOnline.

Online Meal Payments
Manage your child's meal account with ease ... Irving ISD is proud to offer a safe and secure way for parents to make online payments for school meals and view student meal account activity from home or work.  To setup your online account you will need your student's Irving ISD Student ID Number.

Internet Safety Education with i-SAFE
We are pleased to announce that the Irving ISD has partnered with i-SAFE to provide Internet safety education for students. An i-SAFE account has been created for teachers who will receive an email from i-SAFE with instructions for accessing their accounts. This district subscription to i-SAFE will allow all teachers access to i-SAFE’s Internet Safety curriculum.   i-SAFE is the worldwide leader in Internet safety education. Founded in 1998 and endorsed by the U.S. Congress, i-SAFE is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the online experiences of youth everywhere. i-SAFE incorporates classroom curriculum with dynamic community outreach to empower students, teachers, parents, law enforcement, and concerned adults to make the Internet a safer place.

Grant for Candidates Seeking Alternative Teacher Certification
Irving ISD has entered into a grant partnership with Quality ACT Alternative Certification Program. If a recommended candidate for a position in Irving ISD is enrolled in the Quality ACT program for certification, they may qualify for a $1300 grant to offset the cost of their certification program. The teachers must be seeking certification in selected fields.

New "Getting Started Guides" for OpenOffice Posted
New guides that give helpful steps and instructions for formatting, shortcuts, toolbars, transitions, drawing/graphics, formulas, customizations and other basics have been posted on the Irving ISD website.  These helpful guides and other online tutorials are posted for student, teachers, and staff to assist with mastering OpenOffice, the districts standard office applications software.  These can be helpful at home also since OpenOffice can be downloaded on personal computers for free also.
Afterschool Art Lab Program
Work on art class assignments and explore new visual arts project during the Afterschool Art Lab. Twice a week students have two hours to dedicate to artistic pursuits, outside of the classroom. The Irving Arts Center provides the time, space and professional guidance in a creative atmosphere.   The program is free and open to all Irving ISD middle and high school students. Non IISD student residing in Irving will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Student must register prior to attending.
Strong Fathers / Strong Families Calendar of Events
Strong Families programs are quality parent involvement programs. These programs and events are focused on parent (especially father) involvement that may emphasize academic achievement, safe and drug free schools, how to counter tobacco use, behavior intervention.

Home Schooled Students
  • College Advanced Placement Test for Home-Schooled Students
    Any “home-schooled student” wishing to take one or more high school College Board Advanced Placement Exam(s) should contact the counseling office at their local high school for exam offerings, registration, and fee information by March 26, 2010.  The specific exam times for the Advanced Placement Exams scheduled from Monday May 3, 2010 to Friday May 14, 2010 can be found at www.collegeboard.com.

  • PSAT/NMSQT for Home-Schooled Students
    Any 11th grade “home-schooled student” wishing to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) on October 14, 2009 should contact the counseling office at their local high school for registration details and exam time by October 7, 2009.

TAKS Study Guides
The Texas Education Agency has developed TAKS Study Guides to help students strengthen the TEKS-based skills that are taught in class and tested on TAKS. The Guides are designed for students to use on their own or for students and families to work through together. Concepts are presented in a variety of ways that will help students review the information and skills they need to be successful on the TAKS.

The voices of college admission officers, principals, superintendents, teachers and students from a variety of school types provide an overview of the benefits of participation in AP, give details about how the AP courses and exams are developed and scored, and share the stories of students whose true academic potential has been uncovered through participation in AP.

GradeSpeed ParentConnection
How can parents access grades, attendance and other student information?  Irving ISD uses ParentConnection and StudentConnection where parents & students log into the GradeSpeed system and then are able to view students' grades, attendance, etc.

Cell Phone Ban in School Zones
This is a reminder that the use of cell phones while driving in Irving school zones is prohibited to help provide additional safety to children. These city guidelines (which will be enforced on school days during active school zone hours) will prevent motorists from engaging in calls by talking, dialing or listening on a hand-held mobile telephone, and entering or reading text messages.  This includes...
