Bombs Away or Fox and Hound

Concept Being Taught:

Throwing, Team Strategy

Objective:

Students will throw the ball towards the “it” using information gathered by other team members.

Grade Level:

3rd – 5th Grade

Equipment:

4 – 6 mats; 30 – 60 gator balls or yarn balls; 10 jerseys

Playing Area:

Basketball court or other large area

Cues:

Fire, Cease Fire, Bombs Away, Spy Mission

Game Description:

Class is divided into two teams.  The mats are open & standing on end, so the students can’t see over them.  Have students stay sitting on their bottoms/crab walk and/or on their knees/crawl.  One person is given a jersey to wear to identify them as “it”.  On cue students begin throwing balls over the mats trying to hit the “it”. Students, including the “it”, may catch the ball or dodge it.  But if a student is hit by a ball they must crab walk or crawl to the back wall and then run around the perimeter of the gym. This is the spy mission, because they can look to see where the other team’s “it” is and report back to their team. I encourage them to use the number and letters on the wall like Battleship. When “it” is hit by a ball, the other team gets a point and another “it” is placed on the team that was hit.  Now one team has one “it” and the other team has two “its”.

Modifications:

“it”  can’t move;  set up trash can to be it and see how many balls get into the cans
