Be an AVID Tutor!

Want to be a successful college student and earn money at the same time?

Provided below is information about job opportunity as an AVID tutor for the 2008-2009 school year open to graduating seniors.   In order to be an AVID tutor, a student will have to be enrolled in a college or university during the 2008-2009 school year.   This is a great opportunity to help our local Irving ISD students attending college in the metroplex to earn additional monies while attending college.  The opportunity is open to any college student within the metroplex area!

 2008-2009 Tutoring Positions Available with the
AVID Program in Irving ISD

Time:  Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-16 hours a week for the 2008-2009 school year. Schedules vary between 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. depending on AVID elective class schedule.

Salary:  $8.97 per hour

Job Description:  Tutors will work with small groups of middle and high school students during the AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) elective classes under the supervision of an AVID teacher.  Tutors must attend training classes (paid time) and will utilize the AVID learning strategies while tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school year.  AVID Tutoring positions are available at Irving High School, Austin, Crockett and deZavala Middle Schools. Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a college or university

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with middle and/or high school students

  • Ability to motivate students to do well

  • Successful completion 16 hours of AVID Tutor Training

General Performance Responsibilities: 

  • Complete 16 hours of AVID Tutor Training (will be paid hourly wage for attendance)

  • Assist in developing the academic and personal strength of AVID students

  • Assist AVID students in developing personal pride

  • Lead collaborative tutorial groups

  • Assist AVID Coordinator/Teacher in other duties as assigned

  • Be positive and professional at all times

  • Be on time and prepared at all times

  • Act as a role model in behavior and wear appropriate attire at all times

State law Senate Bill 9, requires all new applicants who are considered for employment after 1/1/2008, to submit proof of being fingerprinted before beginning work. The cost for fingerprinting is $50.20 and must be paid by the applicant at the time of fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is being done by DPS and SBEC.
