Irving ISD Presidential Speech Plan

The White House Press Secretary has announced that President Barack Obama will deliver his second annual Back-to-School Address to the nation’s students on September 14. Irving ISD appreciates that the President of the United States values education and is willing to emphasize its importance by speaking to the school children of America. The time for the address has not yet been announced.

Irving ISD will not broadcast the President’s speech live to all students. The speech will be videotaped and placed on the district’s website for easy access by families who choose to view the speech at their convenience with their children.

Principals have been instructed that the speech is available to classes that are deemed by the principal to be appropriate for the age and curriculum of the class. Parents can request that their child be excluded if they so choose.

Elementary schools plan to show the video of the speech to third, fourth and fifth graders on September 15, the day after the live speech, with parent permission. In addition to the permission letter, the process will be communicated via TeleParent.

Each middle school will communicate its process for viewing the Presidential address to parents via TeleParent. Parents’ preferences for their children to view or not to view the speech will be honored.

High schools have some major logistical issues depending on the time of day that the speech is aired and the construction status of the school. High schools will not restrict the viewing of the speech, but not everyone who wishes will be able to view it live.  Each high school will communicate its process via TeleParent and its website. Teachers who wish to show the speech live will submit their lesson plan to the principal for approval. Parents who want their students excluded from the Presidential address may submit a written request to the campus principal.
