Below are listing some summer activities and events to fill your summer with fun.  These events are sponsored by the City of Irving.

Summer reading clubs: Readers of all ages can enjoy the Irving Public Library’s 2010 summer reading clubs. Those who read throughout the summer can win prizes by participating at any Irving Public Library through July 31. Prizes will be available while supplies last. The summer reading club is an annual program that offers activities for all age groups to encourage continued reading throughout the summer. July 4

Fourth of July celebrations: Residents will have the opportunity to celebrate the Fourth of July with the following events.

  • Independence Day Parade – The city’s annual Independence Day parade is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. July 3 in downtown Irving. Immediately following the parade, a patriotic concert will be featured at Heritage Park, 217 Main St. A parade route is posted online at www.cityofirving.org. Admission is free. Call (972) 721-2501.

  • Fireworks Display – The City of Irving will host an evening of entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. July 3. The festivities will be held at the intersection of Las Colinas Boulevard and Lake Carolyn Parkway. Activities will include entertainment and games for children. Children interested in participating in games involving water are encouraged to dress appropriately. Concessions will be available for purchase; admission is free. The Irving Symphony Orchestra will perform a patriotic concert beginning at 8:45 p.m. followed by a spectacular high-element fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. choreographed to an exclusive version of the Armed Forces Medley. Supplies for Success: Irving residents and businesses are invited to participate in the 6th Annual Mayor and Firefighters’ Supplies for Success school supply drive July 5–Aug. 6. This citywide event is held to collect school supplies for economically disadvantaged students who attend school in Irving ISD. Donations may be dropped off at any Irving fire station. Financial contributions for the purchase of supplies can be mailed to: IISD Partnerships in Education c/o Supplies for Success Drive, P.O. Box 152637, Irving, TX 75015-2637. E-mail partnership@irvingisd.net to set up a delivery point to drop off large donations. Those who need assistance with supplies should contact their child’s school counselor. July 9 Summer Shred Opportunity: The next free document shredding opportunity will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 9 at the Drop-Off Center, located at 3000 Rock Island Road (west side of parking lot). Bring only paper to be shredded. All shredded materials will be recycled. Residents are limited to two file boxes on a first-come, first-served basis. Call (972) 721-8059.
July 18 PAWS for Reading: This reading enhancement initiative lets children, grades K-6, read to a specially trained therapy dog named Audi on the third Sunday of every month. The next opportunity to meet with Audi begins at 1:30 p.m. July 18 at the Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd. Call (972) 721-2458 to reserve a session. June 2010

June 19 Juneteenth Celebration: Irving will host its annual Juneteenth Celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. June 19 at the Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center, 3925 Jackson St. This year’s event will feature outdoor activities, entertainment and vendor exhibits. There is no cost to attend.
June 19 Square-Foot Gardening: Enjoy a free demonstration on how to construct a square-foot garden from 9:30 a.m. to noon June 19 at Northwest Recreation Center, 2800 Cheyenne St. Learn the best plants to use, as well as the advantages and disadvantages to this gardening method. June 24 Budget hearings: Planning for the fiscal year 2010-11 budget is under way. Residents are invited to provide input on the budget at 7 p.m. June 24 at City Hall, 825 W. Irving Blvd. Adoption of the budget is scheduled for Sept. 23. The city’s budget year runs from Oct. 1-Sept. 30. Residents also may provide input online at www.cityofirving.org under the “Public Input Opportunities” section. Call the City Secretary’s Office at (972) 721-2493 to confirm hearing dates.
June 24-26

Bike Irving: To register for one of the follow free bicycling classes, visit www.cityofirving.org/begreen and select “Educational Opportunities.”  

  • Bicycle Skills for Young Adults (teens) – Teens will learn about bicycle safety and skills from professionally certified instructors from 3 to 6 p.m. June 24 at Lively Pointe Youth Center, 909 N. O’Connor Road. Bicycle and helmet required.

  • Bicycling for Young Children (grades 4–6) – Young cyclists will learn the confidence they need to ride safely on the road or trail from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 26 at the Heritage Park Building, 217 Main St. Lunch will be provided. Bicycle and helmet required.
June 25-26 Half Price Scholastic Book Fair: A variety of books will be available for purchase at half price from 5 to 9 p.m. June 24; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 25 and 26; and 1 to 5 p.m. June 27 at the Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd. Proceeds will support the Irving Public Library. Call (972) 721-2458.
