SAT SEMINAR MATERIAL 

The following tips and strategies will be presented in the seminar:

General:  Many students believe that if they do not know the answers to questions, they should leave them blank, rather than lose a quarter of a point per question if they get them wrong.  We show them how this approach hurts their scores and how to turn it around to their advantage.  In addition, we share time-management approaches and explain why time management is critical for the SAT and all timed tests.

Essay:  Students will learn the biggest and most costly mistake made on the essay and how to avoid it.  This same strategy can be applied to the TAKS test, rhetoric in college, and all writing assignments.

Verbal: We show students how to make the two-blank questions easier than one-blank questions.   We help them avoid time-wasting traps on the reading section.  We show them a specific strategy that could improve their reading comprehension for the rest of their lives.  

Writing:  We discuss why identifying sentence errors, such as subject-verb agreement, fragments, redundancy and wordiness are important.  We do a complete review of proper grammar usage, and discuss why it is important on this test.

Math:  We show students why only 50% correct on this test is the national average. We give them strategies to improve upon this, by identifying and eliminating errors. We show them why calculators can cause errors. We give them a process they can use to improve their math score more than any other section on the test.
