Stipends for Secondary Math and Science Teachers

Weaving Innovative Instructional Strategies and Data into Mathematics and Science

Dear IISD Math and Science Teachers:

As you are aware, the Irving ISD Board of Trustees approved a secondary math teacher retention and professional development stipend as a part of the 2007-2008 budget.  The stipend is based on the premise that the most important element in improving student achievement in mathematics is THE TEACHER.  Irving has been fortunate to employ many highly qualified and excellent teachers in math and science.  Unfortunately, the district finds itself with a much less experienced math and science teaching staff than it has had in the past.  In fact, personnel records show that 75% of the math teachers and 75% of the science teachers in IISD secondary schools have five or fewer years of teaching experience.

The Irving ISD Board of Trustees recognized this fact and has taken steps to recognize, reward, and grow experienced secondary math and science teachers.  This program, known as WIISDMS (Weaving Innovative Instructional Strategies and Data Into Mathematics and Science) is an innovative and creative way to retain these teachers while also recognizing the value of ongoing professional development.  We are truly thankful for the leadership and forward thinking shown by the IISD Board of Trustees.  This summer the Board approved a $1,500 or $3,000 annual retention stipend to all secondary math and science teachers who meet program criteria.

In the first year of implementation (2007-2008), teachers with two to five years of experience will be placed on the stipend schedule.  They will receive $750 on their November paycheck and $750 on their May paycheck.  In the second year of implementation and subsequent years (2008 and beyond), teachers must complete twelve hours of professional development during the preceding year (i.e., 2007-2008) to maintain their stipend. The annual stipend will be paid in November and May of the following year.  Teachers with six or more years of experience will receive stipends of $1,500 in November and $1,500 in May.

Specific information regarding the program is enclosed for your reference.  Thank you for choosing to teach in the Irving ISD. We appreciate you and all you do for our students.  Also, please join me in thanking the Irving Board of Trustees for their leadership and support of science instruction.

Best wishes for a successful school year!

Sincerely,
