Child Safety |
|
Don't forget - National Child Passenger Safety Seat Week is
September 12-18. Parents need to be aware of new laws
affecting drivers and passenger safety. Visit the
Texas PTA Web site for a downloadable flyer that can be used in
your newsletter, sent home with parents, and distributed in your
community.
Start planning now for National Safe Schools Week October
18-24. National Safe Schools Week is an effort to bring
awareness to school violence prevention and promoting school safety.
Over 1,000,000 students across America take a weapon to school each
month, and over 1.3 million students are injured or threatened with
a weapon at school each year (Source: US CDC).
- Hold a poster or t-shirt contest: Ask students to create a
poster or design that expresses the importance of school violence
prevention.
- Dedicate a sporting event: Pick a sporting event most likely to
have high attendance and ask the team to dedicate the game to
National Safe Schools Week and violence prevention.
- Write a newspaper article: Encourage students to submit an
article on school violence prevention and National Safe Schools Week
to the school newspaper.
- Involve local businesses who are often willing to donate items
that can be used as Safe Schools Week contest incentives.
- Organize a forum: Invite the police chief, the superintendent,
the school principal, student resource officers, health teachers,
and student representatives to be on a panel. Host an event at which
these panelists can speak and answer
questions about school safety in your community. Open the event to
parents, students and the wider public.
- Make it official: Contact the mayor or city council in your area
and ask him/her/them to make an official proclamation. You can do
this by calling the mayor's office and asking to speak with the
staff person in charge of requesting a proclamation.
- Send a press release: Spread the word about your Safe Schools
Week events by sending press releases to your local newspapers,
radio and television stations.
- Write a letter to the editor: Submitting a letter to your local
newspaper's editor is a great way to raise awareness of events you
are hosting during National Safe Schools Week and the importance of
violence prevention in your community.

Stay one step ahead of the flu virus this season

Seasonal
Flu and Novel H1N1 Flu Virus Prevention Steps
The first step in prevention is getting your students and faculty
vaccinated against the flu. This year, everyone should also be aware
of the novel H1N1 flu virus - it is different than seasonal flu and so
is the vaccine. Vaccine manufacturers are currently developing
vaccines against the new pandemic strain of the influenza virus, which
are expected to be ready sometime this fall.
However, other flu prevention steps are the same for both flu
viruses. In addition to getting students and faculty vaccinated with
both vaccines, practice these other prevention steps to help prevent
the spread of illness in your school:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a
tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you don't have a
tissue, cough into your elbow.
- Wash your hands often with soap and
water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
Alcohol-based hands sanitizers are
also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or
mouth. Germs can spread that way.
- Stay home if you get sick.
The CDC recommends that you stay
home from work or school, and limit contact with others to keep from
infecting them.
- Use disinfectants on surfaces, as
directed, to help prevent the spread of the influenza virus.
Germs can spread when a person
touches an infected surface and then touches their own eyes, mouth
or nose.
* The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency believes that, based on available
scientific information, currently registered influenza A virus
products - such as Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes and Clorox®
Regular-Bleach - will be effective against the novel H1N1 flu strain
and other influenza A virus strains on hard, non-porous surfaces.
For the most up-to-date information about the novel H1N1 flu virus
and vaccine, visit
www.CDC.gov/H1N1flu.

2009-2010 Membership Theme: Get Back
To Basics!

Texas PTA announces the 2009-2010
membership theme: “Get Back to Basics!” This theme highlights the
importance of families’ involvement in their children’s lives and invites
them to join PTA as a basis for interaction between school and home. The
theme also incorporates “We Want You” and “Join PTA” as a call to action
to join PTA.
Your PTA can interpret and expand upon
the theme in a creative manner, using camouflage, dog tags, basic training
(boot camp) or education basics (like ABC, 123), or the “basic” family. We
have created several graphics and visuals to assist you in exploring this
concept. Graphics can be downloaded from the Texas PTA website.
Texas PTA is very aware of current
economic challenges and understands that people are making tough decisions
on where to spend their money and time. PTA can fulfill a basic need to
connect school, children and family.
You may want to consult the membership
chairman section of the
Texas PTA Handbook (check with your president for a copy or view it
online) and the
Texas PTA Membership Chairman’s Guide. The Guide is available to
download (free) under the “Resources” tab on the Member’s Only section of
the Texas PTA Web site, or you can purchase a hard copy online or in the
Texas PTA Market at Summer Leadership Seminar.
Please remember that membership
recruitment is a year-round effort. Invite your community and business
leaders, as well as your administration, to be a part of your association.
Spend a few minutes planning your campaign to inspire interest throughout
the year. Remember to reach out to families who are new to your area and
encourage them to join PTA and take an active role in their child’s
education. |

Do You Know the PTA
Difference?

If you want other parents to become PTA members or
increase their involvement, share this information with them.
While the term "PTA" is commonly used to describe
any parent group, not all parent groups are the same. Here are some
ways the Parent Teacher Association stands out:
- Founded in 1897, PTA is the nation's original
and premier parent involvement group in schools.
- Local PTAs are supported by a national and state structure
that provides valuable information, programs, resources, and
training. This structure offers a network of support while leaving
local units free to select the priorities, programs, and
activities that address the needs of their schools.
- PTA believes parents are more than fundraisers.
- PTA works with parents to advocate for proper funding,
leadership, and instruction for all schools and school districts.
- PTA is a united national voice for children.
Not all decisions affecting a child's school
happen at the local level, and the mission of PTA is to address the
educational and social needs of all children. For more than a
century, PTA has been a driving force in national education policies
and programs. Today, PTA continues to champion the importance of
family involvement; safe and nurturing environments; and proper
funding, curriculum, and leadership in our public schools.
Learn more about the
PTA difference—and tell others about it too! If you or someone you know is not yet a member,
join PTA today!
