Information to assist home campus teachers
The following information is designed to help teachers understand district
policies and procedures concerning their students who are assigned to the
Reassignment Center (RAC). Basic information as well as policies for
sending assignments have been included. We encourage teachers with any
questions or concerns to contact us at 972-600-4600. We look forward to
working with you in the education of our students.
The Basics
The RAC is an off campus Discipline Alternative Education Program (DAEP) mandated by
Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code. When a student is sent to the RAC that
student will be assigned to a classroom with one teacher. Students
complete their coursework at their assigned carrel, and only leave the
classroom for counseling, tutoring or supervised restroom breaks. Students
go through a metal detector upon entering the building. Lunches and
jackets are searched each day. No other items are allowed to be brought in
by students. Students are not allowed to take books or assignments in or
out of the building. Materials are kept at the RAC and are only taken out
on a student's final day. Items sent through intercampus mail will be
returned that way. Students are supervised at all times and are expected
to follow a strict code of conduct. Classes are gender segregated.
Students assigned to an DAEP are prohibited by state law from being on any
other school campus/property or participating in any school related
functions while assigned to the DAEP.
Point System
Students are assigned a certain number of points
to earn before they return to their home campus. To earn points, students
are expected to follow the rules and be on task at all times on approved
activities. Besides completing their coursework, these activities may
include Boys Town (a social skills program) and numerous
counseling opportunities.
Students may also earn bonus points for excellence in
attendance and behavior. Students have their points evaluated daily.
Policies for Sending Assignments
Assignments:
All core and elective teachers are required
by district and state policies to provide work on a regular basis to their
students who are assigned to the RAC.
Assignments may include: make-up work, work currently being covered in
class, review of past materials, TAKS or other test preparations or any other
work you feel will be beneficial to the student. So that students do not
have long periods of time without work in any given subject, when a student is
three-quarters of the way done with their current packet, the next packet will be requested by the RAC teacher. Please
list assignments on the district approved RAC assignment sheet form and keep one copy of that assignment sheet for yourself for
reference.
Lab, elective, PE or other non-traditional classes:
Alternate work will
need to be provided to substitute for activities that cannot be replicated at the RAC.
Special Education Students:
Please make sure that all work
complies with the students IEP before sending it to the student.
Textbooks:
Each teacher is required to provide textbooks or
other educational materials needed for their students to complete their
assignments. If a student does not have a book checked out to them, please
send one with their assignment. Please make sure texts are clearly
labeled with the school name, your name and the students name. Textbooks
sent thru intercampus mail will be returned that way. Please check with
your school administrator if you have any textbook concerns.
Tests:
Please make sure that tests or quizzes are clearly
labeled. Note any special instructions (i.e. "may use calculator", "open book"...)
on the test or assignment sheet. Tests/quizzes are removed from the
packet when received and the student will take the test at a table away from
their carrel.
Supplies:
Students are required to provide their own paper and
pencil. For security and disciplinary reasons, students are not allowed to
have the following supplies while at alternative school: laptops, pens,
backpacks or binders. The RAC will provide the following supplies to
students as needed: calculators, map pencils, scissors, glue and highlighters.
Technology and Reference Material:
Each classroom is furnished
with dictionaries, atlases, and encyclopedias. We do not have a library.
Each classroom has two student computers with at least one connected to the
internet. With 15 or more students per class, students are limited to how much time they have access to the computer. Internet
use is greatly restricted and is for research purposes only. Students are
not allowed to be on websites that allows access to any email programs.
This includes Blackboard. Teachers with assignments on Blackboard
should either send a hard copy of the assignment or download the information on
to a disk to be sent with the assignment.
Computer programs available in each classroom are Microsoft Word, Excel,
Power Point, Publisher, Cognitive Tutor and Understanding Math. Other programs may be available on certain computers. Please check with
the RAC teacher's to see what's available.
Students who have been sent to the RAC for computer violations or who do not
follow RAC computer guidelines, may have their computer privileges revoked.
Visiting your student while they are at the RAC
Teachers,
counselors, administrators and other staff are welcome and encouraged to visit
their students at any time. We suggest calling first to make sure the
student is in attendance or that testing is not taking place.
When a student finishes their DAEP Assignment
Students will be
returned to their home campus when they have served the assigned number of days
and earned their points. In some instances, students could be returned
early to their home campus for any of the following reasons: participation
in the RAC Parent/Student Counseling Program, earning bonus points for good
behavior/attendance, administrative or ARD decision, or if the student is not
being sent work from all home campus teachers
