A native of Madrid, Spain, Flood moved to the United States and attended junior college at Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, Florida, then attended Tarrant County Junior College. She transferred to University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. She earned her masters degree in Spanish literature at UTA. Flood joined Irving ISD as Spanish teacher at Crocket Middle School and Lamar Middle School in 2002. She became full-time Spanish teacher at Lamar in 2006. Melendez joined IISD in 1994 as substitute custodian and became night custodian at Austin in 1995. After serving with the floor care team and night lead, Melendez was promoted to the position of building manager in 2001.
