Mission Statement:  The Irving ISD, in partnership with families and the community, shall meet the educational needs of students with auditory impairments by producing engaged learners who are critical thinkers, leaders, and contributors in a technological, diverse, and competitive 21st century world.

Beginning Sign Language Classes
 Begin January 24, 2011

Class Schedule

The Irving Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD) was established in 1975.
The teachers are all certified Teachers of the Deaf.

Students who receive services from the RDSPD are those who qualify as auditorally-impaired and whose hearing loss interferes with processing linguistic information. A student's educational performance must be adversely affected by the hearing loss, giving him or her the need for educational assistance. A student (age birth to 22 years) is determined eligible for the RDSPD by the local Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee.

When students need daily direct instruction from a teacher of the deaf or services of a sign language interpreter, they attend Britain Elementary School, Bowie Middle School, and Nimitz High School.

Teachers and Parent Advisors

A teacher of the deaf goes into the homes of deaf infants that are served through Early Childhood Intervention to provide parent training each week.

At the RDSPD, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed for each student based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). All students have access to the general education curriculum. The Irving ISD curriculum is followed and supplemented with much additional instruction in language and communication.

Intermediate Sign Language Classes

Begins April 4, 2011

General Information

Class Schedule

Beginning at kindergarten, students may go into general education classes for some academic subjects and for physical education, art, and music, as determined by the ARD committee.

When required, an interpreter/inclusion specialist provides assistance to students who attend general education classes.

Children who attend the RDSPD are provided amplification through personal hearing aids and/or assistive listening devices.

Students are taught using a variety of individualized communication systems. Speech is encouraged.

Per an ARD committee decision, speech-language therapy and other related services outlined in the IEP are provided through Irving ISD.
Some students who attend classes at their neighborhood schools also receive assistance from an itinerant teacher of the deaf.

Sign language classes are available in the evening for parents and other interested individuals in the community.
