ABSENCES DEFINED
(For Classroom Makeup Work)
Excused Absences
Any student not already exempted from the compulsory attendance law may
nevertheless be excused for temporary absence resulting from any cause
acceptable to the teacher, principal, or superintendent of the school in
which the child is enrolled (TEC 25.087).
Absences for the purpose of observing
religious holy days, including traveling for that purpose, shall be excused
if the parent submits a written request before the absence. For ADA
purposes, the student shall be counted as if they attended school. If the
student satisfactorily completes the work for the day, in a reasonable time,
then the day will count as a day of compulsory attendance.
A student who misses part of a day because
of health care professionals shall be given an excused absence and shall be
counted as if present for ADA purposes. If the student satisfactorily
completes the work missed in a reasonable time, then the day will count as a
day of compulsory attendance.
Unexcused Absence
All absences not included above will be
marked "unexcused".
Exception
If the parent/guardian desires to take the child out of school for a reason
other than an illness or death in the family, he/she may make prior
arrangements to do so. However, prior arrangements are limited to two days
per semester and will not be granted during six-weeks tests, semester exams,
or state mandated or locally authorized testing periods. Prior arrangements
cannot be made by phone. Parent(s) must meet with the principal or designee
personally to make such arrangements.
Ages of Attendance
Any child five (5) years of age or older
and under twenty-one (21) years of age at the beginning of the scholastic
year (September 1) and who has not graduated from high school and who is a
legal resident of the District, shall be admitted to the schools of this
District free of charge. Any child four (4) years old who is economically
disadvantaged and/or is limited English proficient is eligible for
Pre-Kindergarten.
A child entering Irving public schools for
the first time in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten or first grade shall be
required to present a birth certificate or other legal proof of birth date
and identity.
Attendance,
Minimum for Class Credit
A student must attend at least 90% of the days of
class to be given credit for the class. A student who fails to meet this
requirement may petition the attendance committee for credit because of
extenuating circumstances. If the committee denies the student credit, then
the decision may be appealed to the Board.
The attendance committee must be appointed by the
Board. Classroom teachers must comprise a majority of the membership of the
committee.
Assignments for a
Student Who is Absent
Assignments for a student should be made
as soon as possible and returned to the administrator requesting such
assignment. An assignment request should be processed only if the student
is absent.
Coding (Attendance
Rolls)
Only the following codes have been
approved by the Texas Education Agency for use in this District on your
attendance rolls:
O Original Entries -
Pupils entering a Texas public school district for the first time during the
current school year. A pupil can only be coded "O" by the first district
he/she entered in Texas.
R Re-entries -
Pupils entering the school district for the first time during the current
school year from other Texas public school districts. These pupils have
previously been recorded as "O" and/or "R" in the other Texas public school
districts.
C Re-entries (change) -
Used for pupils entering from other grades, campuses or attendance records
within the school district and other re-entering pupils that have previously
been recorded as "O" and/or "R" in the other Texas public school districts.
W Withdrawal -
To be used when a student is withdrawing from your school. The student
should present you with a withdrawal slip to sign. You should then enter
the "W" opposite the student's name and in the space under the date on your
roll that is indicated on the withdrawal slip.
A Absent -
Should you mark an "A" in the wrong space, strike through error and initial.
Each teacher or other school employee who
records pupil attendance shall make all entries in ink. Entries must not be
made with pencil and then traced with ink. Under no circumstances should
eraser or ink eradicator be used on the attendance register (teacher roll
sheet). If errors are made, strike through the error, enter corrections
nearby, and initial.
The word "tardy" or the symbol "T" for
tardy must not be used on the official, auditable second period roll since
the pupil is either present or absent when the roll is taken.
