COMMUNICATION
Teachers are key in representing the
school and district among the public, and their role in establishing
positive public relations in the community is invaluable. Though their
first priority is classroom teaching, a teacher should always be aware
that even their mode of dress, demeanor, and interpersonal attitudes
will reflect upon the school and district, and are important tools in
producing positive community relations.
The student is the most important
line of communication between the school and community. In addition to
the high quality of education given to the child, school and district
information sent home with the child must also be of high quality.
Letters containing appropriate and well-written information prevent
misconceptions of activities occurring at the child’s school.
Information sent home with the student concerning anything other than
that particular teacher’s relationship with the student shall have the
approval of the building principal.
News Media Procedures
The Irving
Independent
School District will disseminate accurate information to the public through
the District's Public Information Department. [Board Policy
GBBA (Local)]
Guidelines for
administering this policy are as follows:
-
The director of public
information, the public information specialist, and the video production
specialist shall work with District staff and the members of the Public
Information Network (PIN) to coordinate District news. News items submitted by PIN representatives or
other school staff to the Public Information Department will be released
to the news media. For best results, news information should be forward
to the Public Information Department two weeks in advance. News
information may be forwarded to the Public Information Department via fax
(972-600-5201), intercampus mail or e-mail: Public Information (for IISD
e-mail) and/or
PublicInformation@irvingisd.net (Internet).
-
Requests that individuals
receive from the news media for data shall be referred to the Director of
Public Information.
-
Release of District data
such as test scores, grades, percent of failures, dropout rates, and
budget costs, shall be coordinated by the Director of Public Information.
-
When a reporter contacts an
employee for an interview, the employee should advise the Director of
Public Information. If there is any concern about responding to a
reporter’s questions, an employee should advise the reporter that the
Director of Public Information will be contacted before any questions are
answered.
-
Requests from the news
media for pictures of students for any reason shall be referred to the
Director of Public Information. Under no
circumstances shall pictures of students who have been injured or died be
released to the news media without permission of a parent or guardian. It
is preferable this permission be in writing.
-
In order for pictures to
be taken of special education students
for publicity purposes, federal law requires that written
parental/guardian permission be received. Each principal will
assume responsibility for developing a parental permission form for this
purpose.
-
In the event of a crisis, the
Director of Public Information will contact and communicate with the news
media.
