FIELD TRIPS

There are two types of field trips: (1) District wide required trips (fine arts and academic) and (2) teacher determined.

Field trip and vehicle request forms will be submitted for administrative approval at least two weeks prior to the date of the field trip.  Overnight trips must have prior approval of the Superintendent of Schools or designee in addition to parental approval.  The superintendent will approve all overnight trips and report on them at the next board meeting or call special meetings to approve the trips.  Allowable travel expenses for students are not the same as for employee travel.  Please refer to the current travel guidelines.

Instructional Guidelines for Field Trips:

The building principal is authorized to approve requests for field trips which, in his opinion, meet the following guidelines:

 1.        Requests should be submitted at least two weeks in advance.

 2.        The chief criterion for the advisability of the teacher determined field trip is the contribution it can make to the curriculum objectives for the course.  This indicates that the trip is viewed as a particularly effective means of getting certain desired understandings.

 3.        An added purpose of the field trip is that of giving students first-hand experience which is not otherwise possible in the classroom setting.

 4.        The field trip should have a direct relationship to the instructional activities of the classroom.

 5.        The teacher should identify those values which the teacher expects the field trip to supply.

 6.        The teacher should make the trip prior to requesting approval for the class.  This is for the purpose of determining whether it would be worthwhile for the students and how it can be made most productive.

 7.        Planning the field trip should be as much of an educational process as the field trip itself.

 8.        It is the responsibility of the teacher to make sure that each student has a mission to perform while on the field trip in order that it will be an educational experience rather than an outing.

 9.        The person serving as the guide for the field trip should have a clear conception of the purpose of the field trip.

10.       It is the responsibility of the teacher to make all arrangements related to parental notification, transportation arrangements, individual and group procedures during the trip, and proper acknowledgment to the guide and other helpers on the trip.

11.       The teacher should continue the lesson after the field trip using data collected and providing for student-teacher critique.

12.        The only acceptable methods of transportation are:

  1. When transporting ten or more students, only school buses or buses chartered from motor bus companies may be used.

  2. Passenger cars may be used to transport less than ten students.  The operator of a passenger car used to transport students shall ensure that the number of passengers does not exceed the designated capacity of the vehicle and that each passenger is secured by a safety belt.  The owner and/or driver of privately owned vehicles assume all liability.  All IISD vehicles must be driven by IISD employees.
