GRADING SYSTEM

Criteria for Determining Citizenship Grades

One of the most important responsibilities of our elementary and secondary schools is the task of educating boys and girls to appreciate and practice good citizenship.  Respect for the rights of others, fair play, honesty, and good sportsmanship as well as cooperativeness, kindness, and ready acceptance of other persons as equals are representative characteristics of good citizenship and the American way of life.

Homework

Homework should have a purpose.  It should be checked, evaluated and reviewed, or in some way looked at by the teacher.  Conditions under which homework makes the most sense to students include the following:  not having too much too often, knowing that the teacher will look at it, and knowing the valuable purpose behind the assignment.

Homework may be assigned to achieve a variety of purposes:  for reinforcement of learning, advanced preparation, extensions of assignments, creative assignments, and completion of independent practice.  The amount of homework should be the minimum that is necessary in order to achieve the purpose.  In determining the frequency and length of assignments, the teacher should let the needs of the class be the guideline.

Homework should be assigned after students have sufficient knowledge and/or mastery to complete the assignment independently.  Parents should be encouraged to monitor the homework assigned to their children.

Late Work

To accept or not accept late work should be left to the discretion of the teacher.

Make-Up Work

The length of the absence should determine the amount of time given for makeup work.  For example, 3 days absences - 3 days to turn in makeup work.  Except in extreme cases, two weeks should be a maximum amount of time allowed for return makeup work.  All work missed during an unexcused absence cannot be made up.

Please refer to the “Grading and Reporting Procedures” document for elementary for further information in this area.

Turn-Around Time

Since tests are used as an assessment tool and as a means of reinforcement, it is important that they be returned and reviewed as soon as possible.  The turn-around time should be within a week, but two to three days would be preferred.

Homework should be graded and returned within a reasonable time.  Depending on the nature of the assignment, turn-around time will vary; but to be the most effective, it should be returned as soon as possible.
