PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Seven non-student days will be designated for campus staff development, planning and preparation for the 2010-2011 school year.  This is the minimum requirement for staff development and is included in the total days of the teacher’s contract.  Induction Year teachers (teachers new to the Irving ISD) will have three days of orientation on August 13, 14 & 15, 2010 at MacArthur High School.

The district offers extensive staff development programs throughout the year.  These sessions can be found with the online registration system on the Staff Development website at www.irvingisd.net/staffdev These sessions are offered at no charge to District employees.

Each year a Staff Development Task Force has been created to study and make recommendations for the future professional growth of all district employees.  A concept statement with its eight guiding principles follows below.  The Board of Trustees accepted the concept statement on May 7, 2001 at the regularly scheduled meeting (DMA Local).

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The Irving Independent School District is committed to providing quality and effective professional development, fueled by knowledge, communication and dynamic leadership, in a way that:

■  Principle 1 - reflects the district mission statement and Board goals

■  Principle 3 - supports and invests in principals as catalysts for professional development with the assistance of central administration

■  Principle 4 - recognizes the individual as the primary unit of change and empowers the campus to support and invest in each individual’s professional growth

■  Principle 5 -  acknowledges that time is a critical attribute in professional development

■  Principle 6 -  promotes multiple forms of on-going professional development

■  Principle 7 -  provides for the integration and implementation of research-based practices

■  Principle 8 -  emphasizes that sustained individual growth is a professional responsibility for all district personnel so that professional development drives exemplary student achievement and promotes a community of life-long learners.
