LEARNING RESOURCES / RATTEREE

Learning Resources at the Ratteree Center
2121 S. MacArthur Blvd.   ●   Irving, Texas  75060
972.600.4818

Learning Resources houses the Instructional Media Center, the library processing department, the textbook warehouse, and the learning resources director’s office. This department orders, receives, and distributes library books, curriculum items, and textbooks for all campuses. The director oversees the library program as well as textbooks and badges.

Our purpose is service; we exist to provide you with the materials and services that will enrich each child’s education. Please do not hesitate to call us (ext. 4820) if you have suggestions for new items or services that we can provide, or to tell us how we can better serve you.

The Instructional Media Center, located in the Ratteree Career Development Center at 2121 S. MacArthur Blvd., serves as the district’s Library Media Center. It houses class sets of paperback books, videos, and professional library related books. These may be requested via your school’s librarian, via email to Betsy Johnson (bejohnson@irvingisd.net ), or via the AV/Paperback Book Request (Form #577B). These resources are available to the district’s administrators, faculty, and staff in support of professional development and the district’s curriculum. The online catalog includes these items. (http://www2.youseemore.com/IrvingSchool/default.asp).

Hours

Learning Resources’ hours during the school year are 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Friday. During the summer, hours will conform to those of the administration building. Online resources are available 24/7.

The Circulation Collection

Learning Resources has video recordings and classroom book sets that you can check out for use in your classroom. The secondary supplemental novel sets that accompany the recent literature adoption are housed here as well. Requests for these books should be sent via email to bejohnson@irvingisd.net or call ext. 4818.

Sound educational practice dictates that the teacher preview all materials before they are presented to students and those teachers demonstrate in their lesson plans the curriculum connection of all supplementary materials.

All audio-visual materials that are used in the classroom should meet the criteria outlined in the Board Policy EFA (Local). The campus principal, prior to its use in the classroom, must approve use of any audio-visual item not purchased by the district. See Form #576, Request for Utilization of Materials from Source Other than Irving ISD.

Production Services

To supplement the library’s production center located on each campus, Learning Resources has the following equipment available for use: a 36” laminator, a transparency maker, Accu-Cut dies, Ellison die cuts, Variquest electronic die cut machine (http://www.variquest.com/cutout-maker-1800) , a Merlin Lettering System, and a poster printer. Learning Resources also stocks a variety of paper and other supplies; however, all materials must be used at the Ratteree. Use of Learning Resources supplies and equipment is limited exclusively to the production of items for IISD classrooms. Most schools have set up accounts to pay for materials used at the Ratteree. For those schools without accounts, individual staff members may pay for supplies.

Delivery Services

Deliveries of materials from Learning Resources are made once each week to every school in the district. Ordering and returning materials on time will be greatly appreciate by your fellow teachers.

Research/Professional Education Services

Learning Resources has a number of tools to assist with research. Among these is a staff member that is knowledgeable in the searching techniques, a professional librarian, and online databases. Some of these resources are in Spanish. Others can be translated into several other languages.

Our goal is to meet all research needs: from the classroom to the boardroom. Professional research databases are available to you through your campus library page (http://www.irvingisd.net/library/research/index.htm). The items in this collection may be placed on hold through the online catalog system as well. Then these items will be delivered to your building for your use. There are also ASCD professional materials available online at http://galesites.com/ascd/irving/index.php .

The district’s professional education library, the Joe Cassel Professional Library, is located upstairs next to the staff development department in the administration building at 2621 W. Airport Freeway. It is available to administrators, faculty, and staff during normal office hours for administrative building.
