Teachers may devote a small portion of
the class period to supervised study. This practice is justifiable only
when it is actually supervised. To properly supervise, a teacher should
spend this time with individual students helping them to analyze and
understand what they are reading, detecting defects in their study and
reading habits, assisting in the correction of these habits, and conferring
with them regarding previous work they have done. This can best be done by
walking among them and conferring quietly.
