Campus Media Fair
Its time for students to enter projects into their Campus Media Fair.  Each campus will set dates for judging and announcing campus winners. 
Winning Campus Media Fair entries have the chance to move on to the District Technology Media Fair.  Deadline for entries is December 10.

 

Irving ISD Middle School One-Act Play Festival
(Saturday, November 21, 2009)  You are invited to attend the Irving ISD Middle School One-Act Play Festival to be held at Nimitz High School on Saturday, November 21, 2009. Admission is free.   Performing will be Travis Middle School (9:00 am), Houston Middle School(10:15 am), Lamar Middle School(11:30 am), Bowie Middle School(1:30 pm), de Zavala Middle School(2:45 pm) and Crockett Middle School (4:00 pm).
Scholarships, Scholarships, Scholarships!!!
Seniors, graduating from high school is an exciting time and Irving Schools foundation is very proud of your accomplishments.  This year, the Foundation is awarding 94 scholarships totaling close to $150,000 in honor or memory of many very special people.  NOW is the time to apply online for these scholarships ... the deadline to apply is January 8, 2010.  All applications must be submitted online through the website, however transcripts and any other attachments that cannot be scanned must be hand delivered to your counselor.  APPLY NOW!

DRAFT 2010-2011 School Calendar
Link to Proposed Calendar InformationAttached for review, distribution and discussion with staff, parents and community members is a proposed DRAFT 2010-2011 school calendar.  The calendar is a result of preliminary discussion with the Board of Trustees during Noon Work Sessions and is to be release for additional input.

Project Tomorrow: Speak Up Survey
Speak Up, a national online research project facilitated by Project Tomorrow, gives individuals the opportunity to share their viewpoints about key educational issues. Each year, findings are summarized and shared with national and state policy makers. Participating schools and districts can access their data online, free-of-charge.   We value your opinions so take the time to complete your Speak Up Survey!

One sports season is coming to an end and the other just beginning.  Or male athlete of the month is Windford Tennell of Irving High School and the female athlete of the month is
Lizette Partida of Nimitz High School.

Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis
The Arthritis Foundation is planning to hold their Tingle Bell Run/Walk on Saturday, December 5th in the Sundance Square in Fort Worth.  Any staff members interested in participating with an Irving ISD team contact Teresa Phillips tphillips@irvingisd.net.

Intermediate Sign Language Class
Intermediate Sign Language Class will be offered starting January 25th on Monday nights.  Classes will be held at Britain Elementary School and are free to families of deaf students, $10 for district employees, and $20 for all others.  You do not need to pre-register ... come to the first class and register then.

EMS Helicopter
The air medical team that landed on the Irving High School practice field was NOT there to pick up a patient, but to educate students enrolled in the district's new Emergency Medical Services class.

Singley Academy Culinary Program
Things are really heating up for the Singley Academy's Culinary Program.  With the addition of a new state of the art kitchen things are really starting to sizzle in this four-year, hands-on program. 

5th Annual Craft Fair
Please Join the Academy Class of 2010 for the 5th Annual Craft Fair to be held at the Jack E. Singley Academy on December 12, 2009 from 9 am until 4 pm.  There will be lots of shopping, a silent auction, and our very own Santa. Come and have your picture taken with Santa.  Santa will be available from 10:00 am -12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.

Irving ISD Security: Security Plan, 2009-2010

Pat Lamb)  Over the last several years, I have sought to keep you informed of security matters through an annual updated letter.  I truly feel that as parents and students of our District, you have a right to know the steps we are taking to provide a safe, secure, and orderly environment within our schools.  Like you, I have watched the frightening images of violence in schools through the lens of media coverage; and, like you, I am concerned as a parent when I see innocence violated by those who would seek to cause harm to others.  Please know that we give ourselves to the matter of providing safety and security to the students, staff, and visitors of our District; we constantly strive to improve, to learn of new methods, to train for the emergencies we hope never to occur.  And now, instead of looking over the horizon to the potential for violence, we find concern for the health of our children in the form of the H1N1 flu.  Indeed, the threat to our students and staff is broad and varied ...(read more)

Meal Accounts now Accepted at Ala Carte Lines
(Secondary Schools)  Thanks to an upgrade in technology equipment, all Express Lines and cash-only concepts (found in secondary schools) now accept funds from student meal accounts, including funds deposited via ParentOnline.

Online Meal Payments
Manage your meal account with ease ... Irving ISD is proud to offer a safe and secure way for parents to make online payments for school meals and view student meal account activity from home or work.  To pay for school lunches online you will need your students Irving ISD Student ID Number.

Internet Safety Education with i-SAFE
We are pleased to announce that the Irving ISD has partnered with i-SAFE to provide Internet safety education for students. An i-SAFE account has been created for teachers who will receive an email from i-SAFE with instructions for accessing their accounts. This district subscription to i-SAFE will allow all teachers access to i-SAFE’s Internet Safety curriculum.   i-SAFE is the worldwide leader in Internet safety education. Founded in 1998 and endorsed by the U.S. Congress, i-SAFE is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the online experiences of youth everywhere. i-SAFE incorporates classroom curriculum with dynamic community outreach to empower students, teachers, parents, law enforcement, and concerned adults to make the Internet a safer place.

New "Getting Started Guides" for OpenOffice Posted
New guides that give helpful steps and instructions for formatting, shortcuts, toolbars, transitions, drawing/graphics, formulas, customizations and other basics have been posted on the Irving ISD website.  These helpful guides and other online tutorials are posted for student, teachers, and staff to assist with mastering OpenOffice, the districts standard office applications software.  These can be helpful at home also since OpenOffice can be downloaded on personal computers for free also.
Soundzabound Royalty Free Music
Looking for music to use with student or teacher multimedia and PowerPoint?  Irving ISD has a new district subscription to Soundzabound for royalty free music.  Passwords are available for each campus for home access.
Afterschool Art Lab Program
Work on art class assignments and explore new visual arts project during the Afterschool Art Lab. Twice a week students have two hours to dedicate to artistic pursuits, outside of the classroom. The Irving Arts Center provides the time, space and professional guidance in a creative atmosphere.   The program is free and open to all Irving ISD middle and high school students. Non IISD student residing in Irving will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Student must register prior to attending.

This 16 minute CollegeBoard Documentary Film AP 50 Years: Higher Standards, Higher Learning is ideal for raising the awareness of AP courses and their benefits for students, parents, and faculty members. The voices of college admission officers, principals, superintendents, teachers and students from a variety of school types provide an overview of the benefits of participation in AP, give details about how the AP courses and exams are developed and scored, and share the stories of students whose true academic potential has been uncovered through participation in AP.

Cell Phone Ban in School Zones
This is a reminder that the use of cell phones while driving in Irving school zones is prohibited to help provide additional safety to children. These city guidelines (which will be enforced on school days during active school zone hours) will prevent motorists from engaging in calls by talking, dialing or listening on a hand-held mobile telephone, and entering or reading text messages.  This includes...
