Technology and Best Practices in Science Learning - Using the POE (Predict-Observe-Explain) Model

One-on-one presents a unique opportunity for learners to participate in the construction of their scientific experience and knowledge. In this presentation, the POE model will be examined as an avenue of constructivism. A freeware software tool will be modeled for educators to utilize POE in their science classrooms.

The i-CAN project is a bold instructional initiative designed to prepare students with the skills needed for the 21st century workplace. The initiative places laptops in the hands of all high school students and teachers who are working in wireless environments. The initiative is transforming the teaching and learning environment; is fostering better communciation between the home/school and teacher; and is promoting students as active learners. The i-CAN initiative is an instructional inititaive that impacts every student regardless of of socio-economic status, disability or achievement level.

Expanding the Creative and Intellectual Range of Laptops with MicroWorlds EX

The first 1:1 schools embraced laptops as vehicles for using multimedia authoring environments, like MicroWorlds EX. With such flexible powerful software students are able to construct knowledge by engaging in meaningful projects across curricula and grade levels. Robotics, dynamic writing, simulation building, mathematical modeling and video game design all come alive in one environment that grows with the learner.

Participants of the Digital Literacy Session will obtain resources they can use in their schools to inform students, teachers, and parents of the dangers using the internet can have in the classroom and at home. Participants will know how to check the validity of a website, check student work for plagiarism, and how to use resources from the session to teach children how to surf safely on the World Wide Web.

Leadership and Sustainability in a One to One Program

The session will focus on the critical elements of sustaining a successful one to one program. Leadership behavior, of the superintendent, principal, tech director, librarian and teachers, will make or break the project. There is now substantial research and our documented experience, in Maine, that specific strategies implemented by each of these positions will move schools into the 21st Century. The strategies will help to successfully integrate the technology tools and resources available in a one to one program. Research and strategic policies and practices will be presented within the framework of Michael Fullan's book Leadership and Sustainability.

What I Learned from Writing a Book About Laptops

My book, "1-to-1 Learning: Laptop Programs That Work" is scheduled to be published by ISTE in 2006. The result of interviews with about three dozen laptop leaders and teachers at public, parochial, and private schools, along with reviews of existing research studies, the book was written to be a resource for current laptop practioners and leaders, as well as those considering a laptop program. Salient points and themes will be discussed and a bibliography will be available as a handout.
