Impact of New
Legislation Will Have on Schools and Technology
Singley Academy Conference
Room
|

Anita Givens |
Anita will give an update on the 81st
Texas
Legislative Session and the
impact
new legislation will have on schools and
technology.
She will also share initiatives that are
occurring at the national level through her
work with SETDA
and other organizations. One-to-one programs
are well positioned to leverage new
opportunities for digital content, online
learning, and 21st century
learning environments. |

The Power of Digital Media
Singley Academy Conference Room

Marco Torres |
Marco
Antonio Torres has taught high school for ten years, and has been media
coach and education technology director for San Fernando High School,
one of the nation’s largest urban schools in Los Angeles. In
addition to his work in the classroom, Marco Torres is also a
professional filmmaker and photographer who uses these digital
storytelling skills to add value to his curriculum. He has been
recognized locally and internationally, including being honored as a
California Teacher of the Year, for his accomplishments in the
classroom, and for the use of technology to empower minority students.

Ten Things to Do
with a “Laptop”:
Learning and Powerful Ideas
Singley Academy Conference Room
|

Gary Stager |
This
presentation promotes sustainable school
innovation via lessons learned over 19 years of
working in "laptop schools." Much of the
skepticism about 1:1 computing is based on the
meager or unimaginative objectives of 1:1
schools. The educational case for truly personal
computing will be made through entertaining
vignettes and video-based case studies of best
practices collected from schools
internationally.
In 1971,
Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon published a
ground-breaking paper entitled, “Twenty Things
to Do with a Computer.” Few of today’s schools,
with or without laptops, satisfy the goals of
that nearly forty year-old document. This
presentation invokes the challenging vision of
the earlier document, updates it and presents
ideas for using laptops in ways that offer
unprecedented learning adventures across K-12
and various subject areas. These imaginative
project-based practices are appropriate whether
your school has a computer per child or one per
thirty. |

The Network is the Computer: The Changing Direction of Classroom Computing
Singley Academy Conference Room
|

David Thornburg |
In 1984, Sun
Microsystem's John Gage proclaimed that the
“network is the computer.” While that seemed
far-fetched then, twenty-five years later we see
evidence that he was right. With over a billion
people on the Internet, and broadband access
widely available around the world, today's kids
can access amazing tools from a variety of
devices carried in their pockets and backpacks.
This
presentation explores the promise of modern
educational computer use. With powerful
“netbooks” selling for little more than the cost
of paper textbooks, and the rapid development of
amazing web-based services, the face of
classroom practice is poised for a dynamic
change. We have moved to the point where
ubiquitous access to technology is an
expectation, not an option – where mryiad
coupled services can be used in support of rich
educational practice, and where each learner can
experience true anywhere/anytime learning. |

The Best Educational Ideas in the World
Singley Academy Conference Room
|

Gary Stager |
The challenge for even the most
imaginative schools is to sustain innovation.
Although digital technology may catalyze changes
in practice, larger ideas create a productive
context for sustaining innovative practice.
Video case studies explore some of the best
educational ideas in the world and demonstrate
how they may support, sustain or require
transformational computing activities. Common
lessons from each creative and seemingly
unrelated context situate the construction of
modern knowledge required for a rewarding life. |

Practical Tips on Planning for Success in a Media Rich
(Or Wannabe Media Rich) Classroom
Singley Academy Conference Room
|

Marco Torres |
This is a very practical workshop
on ideas and strategies teachers can use
tomorrow in their learning spaces (and on their
own). Marco will talk about how a producer of
information is engaged differently than a
traditional receiver of information. Torres
discusses how using digital storytelling
techniques are MAGNIFICENT and EMPOWERING for
learning and learners today. He will demonstrate
how mind mapping, story boarding, and other
methods are key to the success of any project.
Story telling connects content, people,
concepts, emotions, structure, and media to take
our learning to where it needs to be. Come
and experience how this producer/ photographer/
and educator connects all of these dots.
