1:1 Laptop Symposium
Laptops in the classroom ... Irving ISD and a number of other districts across the nation have doing it for a few years now.  For two days these technological trend setters got together to discuss what is next for our digital students.  This year Irving ISD was the host of the 1:1 Symposium at Singley Academy.

  • David Weinberger - Keynote Speaker

    • David Weinberger is a technologist and commentator, probably best known as co-author of the Cluetrain Manifesto (originally a website, and eventually a book). Weinberger's work focuses on how the internet is changing human relationships, communication, and society.  He is also an avid blogger.

    • Jim Moulton, through his deep involvement in the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (Maine's statewide 1 - 1 computing effort in grades 7 & 8), is uniquely prepared to consult with schools, districts, or state & national departments of education around this rising topic in educational computing.

  • Jack Singley - Superintendent of Irving Independent School District

    • Jack Singley is superintendent of Irving ISD where all students in grades 9-12 have wireless laptop computers for use at home and school during the school year. All teacher PK-12 also receive and use a wireless laptop computer. In October 1997, $47 million in bond funds were approved that funded a five-year instructional technology plan that included networking schools and other facilities. In October 2001, $54.8 million in bond funds were approved to update equipment and to provide equipment for new facilities and new programs.

  • Keynote Speaker - Chris Moersch

    • Dr. Chris Moersch is the Director of the National Business Education Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to elevating the level of technology implementation (LoTI) in school systems nationwide. Prior to launching this organization in 1987, he was a school and county administrator and classroom teacher in several school systems throughout California.

  • 21st Century Skills: A MILE Guide

    • Karen Bruett, Dell

    • The Partnership for 21st Century Skills will present the "MILE Guide." This tool helps schools integrate 21st Century Skills with basic skills, resulting in a more effective curriculum that helps educators work smarter, not harder. The presentation will also cover 1x1 computing initiatives and an update on 21st Century Skills.

  • Manatee County's EDGE (Education Through Dynamic Global Experiences)

    • Experience Manatee County's one to one initiative, the EDGE (Education Through Dynamic Global Experiences) project. See videos, student projects, and data from the past 2 years of implementation. Learn how we started with a small pilot and built a successful implementation plan using a variety of funding sources.

  • The Maine Learning Technology Initiative: Not Another Tech Buy

    • Mike Muir, University of Maine at Farmington

    • Maine is the first state to give schools portable, wireless computers for each of their 7th & 8th grade students and teachers. But this project is not about equipment as much as creating engaging learning environments and about building collaborative networks of educators for professional and curriculum development.
