Ten Valuable Tips for Parents

We are so excited to have your son/daughter on our Cosmic Cat Team this year!!  As you know, a child’s success in school is truly a team effort which requires diligence, support, and communication.  Listed below are ten specific ways you can help. Please refer to them throughout the year.  Thank you very much!!

1.   Organization is a key factor to success in middle school. Please check your child’s binder regularly to make sure assignments have been written down and finished.  Some classes, like social studies, will have information to study every night . You should not be hearing “I don’t have any homework”.

2.   Make up work is extremely important following an absence.  Please remind your son/daughter to report to each teacher for make up assignments.

3.  It is also very important to know the dates of all progress reports and report cards.  Be expecting a report on those days, sign it, and send it back the next day. If you note problems, please call the counseling office to schedule an appointment with our team.

4.  Stress the importance of conduct grades.  Most students who are successful academically make high conduct grades.

5.  Not bringing basic supplies such as pencils, pens, and paper to class has a very negative impact on student learning and success.  Teachers do not provide these materials.

6.  Establish a set time each day for homework and make it a priority.

7.  Make sure they have a well lit, quiet place to do homework.  Monitor time spent  viewing TV and playing video games.

8.  Be positive about homework.  Tell your child how important school is.

9.  Reward progress in school.  On the other hand, children need to know that poor choices regarding school work have consequences.  Be firm and follow through.

10.   Keep the lines of communication open.  Feel free to email or phone us about your concerns at any time.
