Margaret Young was our
first instructional leader and mentor. She helped instill the idea that we
had to light the torch to inspire children's minds and souls to reach for a
successful future. Doug Baum continued to keep our torch lit with
his support of these goals. Marty French inspired us to stay in touch with our
original mission as we continued our journey as torchlighters. Robyn
Wolters guided us towards the future. Now the
torch has been passed to Doug Sevier, as he motivates us to keep our
flame of learning aglow. |

Townley History |
|
John F. Townley Elementary
opened February 12, 1979 with 479 students and 32 staff members.
Margaret Young, who had become the first woman principal in 1971 at Brown
Elementary, had spent two and a half years with a committee of teachers
"writing educational specifications for a design in learning". Mrs.
Young had previously served as a teacher, counselor, and reading coordinator
for Irving ISD. The school was built to "radiate a sensitivity to the
value of affective processes". Our symbol became the Torch as the
motto of the school was that "all people can be torchlighters, each person a
teacher of others. The spark may be ignited by a smile, a book, a
paint brush, a song, a dream..." |

Townley's Namesake |
|
As with all elementary
schools in Irving, Townley Elementary was named after a
local person who contributed to the community. Dr. John F. Townley
began his career in the Everman Independent School District in 1952 and
served as a classroom teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent of
schools. In 1970, he joined Irving Independent School District as
superintendent. He retired from the school district in 1985.
Throughout the years, Dr. Townley devoted his life to children as a teacher
and administrator.

Townley School Song
written by Bill Bradley
former Townley music teacher
 |
|
"A colleague from my years
in Germany would sing a German song called, 'Danke'
or 'Thanks'. She had numerous verses written in German, but the
written melody could not be found. On my return to the United States,
this melody kept going though my mind and I decided I would write words
about John F. Townley to compliment the melody. In writing the words,
I thought about all that I love about our school."
