Introduction to Health Science Technology

Grade: 10 or 11        Credit: .5        PEIMS:  12101200

This course gives an overview of the health care industry.  The focus is on career exploration, leadership development, ethical and legal issues, and the history, economics, and trends in financing health care.

Medical Terminology

Grade: 10        Credit: .5        PEIMS: 12121220

A course designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of medicine.  Students relate terms to body systems, identify proper use of words in a medical environment.

Health Science Technology I

Grade: 11 or 12        Credit: 2        PEIMS: 12101300

This is a cluster course that includes skills related to the healthcare industry. Course content relates to patient relationships, working environments, ethical and legal responsibilities. Entry level skills will be developed for taking vital signs, using proper body mechanics, using medical terminology and other skills needed to participate in health occupations.

Pharmacology  (to be added 2009-10)

This course provides students with knowledge and skills in the classification and study of pharmacological agents to understand the treatment, care, and restoration of the client’s health. Students will explore the practical applications of mathematics related to the disease process, dosage calculations, and interaction in therapeutic care.

Gerontology  (to be added 2009-10)

Grade: 10 or 11        Credit: .5        PEIMS:12121230  (GERON)

A course designed to develop knowledge of the aging process and the physical, psycho-social, and nutritional needs of the elderly. Students will develop skills to provide quality assessment and care for the geriatric client. To assure students eligibility for the TDH nurse aide certification, both school-based and long-term care facility training will be provided.

Health Science Technology II

Grade: 12        Credit: 2        PEIMS: 12101400

An occupationally specific course designed to provide knowledge and skills for certification and licensure in an allied health career.

Students develop advanced clinical skills necessary for employment in the health care industry.
