MEGA Program
The MEGA Program
is Irving Independent School District’s alternative high school program. It is an accelerated block schedule, during which students will take five 75-minute classes per day from 8:15am to 3:15pm. Credits are earned on the Quarter System. Every 9 weeks the student completes 5 semester courses and earns 2.5 credits. This schedule allows a student to earn a maximum of ten credits in one school year, thus enabling him or her to catch up on previously lost credits and graduate "on time.”
The first and second parts (semesters) of courses are offered during both the traditional fall and spring semesters. Students, therefore, do not have to wait for a semester to take a required “A” or “B” half of a course. Students who need less than 5 classes and have passed all parts of the Exit Level TAKS will be scheduled in the self paced computer lab to take those classes. These Students will attend school from 8:15am to 12:10pm. If a student has not passed all parts of the Exit Level TAKS, they will be a full day student and have a TAKS prep course in the computer lab.
The members of the staff and faculty in the MEGA Program are committed to excellence and strive in a non-traditional setting to ensure that its students reach their maximum potential, graduate from high school and become lifelong learners.
Admissions
Enrollment in the MEGA program is limited in the number of students accepted each quarter. Admission is by application and attendance at an Orientation Meeting only. There are no automatic nor walk-in admissions. Applications are obtained from the student’s assigned counselor at the home school after the student and counselor agree that enrollment in the MEGA Program is the best placement for the student to reach his maximum potential and graduate from high school. Applications must be signed by the home school counselor and accompanied by a current transcript, a copy of the latest report card and a copy of the latest TAKS Score Report. Enrollment is at the beginning of each nine weeks and is determined by space available in the classes.
Priority for acceptance into MEGA is given to students who are under-credited and over-aged; students who have failed a grade in high school or have dropped out for at least a year. Students who have not repeated at least one grade in high school or who have not dropped out for at least one year are not accepted. Students who would graduate early in three years because they earned 10 credits a year at MEGA also are not accepted because they do not meet the purpose of the program.
A student who is enrolled at MEGA and meets the requirements for mastery of at least four classes per quarter is automatically re-enrolled for each succeeding quarter. The student, however, always has the right to withdraw from UBCL MEGA Program and return to his or her home campus at the beginning of that school’s next semester. Credits earned at MEGA are fully accepted IISD credits and will be reflected on the student’s transcript.
