provides students with basic knowledge of child and adolescent
development principles as well as principles of effective
teaching practice. Students will plan and direct individualized
and group instruction, prepare materials, assist with record
keeping, and other responsibilities of a classroom teacher.
Students will participate in field-based observations and
applications of principles/practices learned in class.
Child Development

Development provides students opportunities to learn concepts
and skills related to parenthood and the development of
children. Prenatal and postnatal care, child guidance
techniques, and special needs of children are also discussed.
Field-based experiences will be included in the course.
Early Childhood Professions I and II

education; professionalism; child growth, development and
learning; guidance and group management; curriculum development,
content and implementation . Students are provided opportunities
to interact with children in a variety of settings.
Nutrition and Food Science

Food Science
and Nutrition consists of the study of nutrition; selection,
storage, and preparation of foods; menu planning; selection and
proper use of equipment and appliances; food processing and
preservation; and management of the food dollar. Students must
complete a supervised occupational activity.
Ready, Set, Teach I

Ready, Set,
Teach! is a field-based internship which provides students a
background knowledge of child and adolescent development
principles as well as principles of effective teaching
practices. Students in Ready, Set, Teach!, which can be taken
for one or two
years, work
under the joint direction and supervision of both a family and
consumer sciences teacher and exemplary educators in direct
instructional roles with elementary, middle, and/or high
school-aged students. Students from the class plan and direct
individualized instruction and group activities, prepare
instructional materials, assist with record keeping, make
physical arrangements, and complete other responsibilities of
classroom teachers. The students are involved in observations as
well as direct student instruction; placement rotations are
utilized to allow students to have experiences in a full range
of education career roles, grade levels, subject areas, and
ability groups. During the course of each week, students
enrolled in Ready, Set, Teach! are involved in instruction from
the family and consumer sciences teacher as well as involved in
supervised field-based observations.

provided more in-depth study of concepts and skills covered in
RST I. Students will participate in field-based internships in
Irving ISD. elementary, middle and high schools.
