It's over -- now tell us what you thought! (Sample Discussion Questions)

  1. Give three reasons you voted for your candidate. What influenced your decision?

  2. Why do you think Barack Obama received so many of the votes? What was your impression when you
    first saw the results?

  3. There are 538 electoral votes that a candidate can earn in US elections. How did Obama earn all 538
of the electoral votes in our election, when thousands of people voted for McCain also?

  4. How well do the voters in our Irving ISD election represent the nation as a whole?

  5. Predict the results of the national US election. Who will win, and by how much? Will the results
be similar to ours or much different? Explain your reasoning.

  6. There are 33,233 students enrolled in Irving ISD. What percent of Irving students voted in the
election this year? How does this compare to the percent of people who voted in the 2008
Presidential election nationwide? (Research the answer)

  7. What percent of votes went to candidates besides Obama and McCain?  How much do you know about these candidates and their parties?  Why do you think parties besides Republican and Democrat did not receive as many votes?  How could this change in the future?

  8. How did you feel participating in the election? How much time and effort did it require? Was your
vote important? Why do you think some people vote in elections and others don't?

  9. Research how a few other countries choose their leaders (or answer based on your own personal experience). What do you think of our current system? Is it fair? Would you change anything?  If you've lived in another country that chooses a leader differently, how does it compare?

  10. What did you learn about the election process that you didn't know before, or one thing you found interesting?
