Overview

The process began when middle school and high school students met via videoconferencing to discuss plans for creating a dynamic database and web-based election page.  This distance learning component of the project was necessary for the schools to form collaborative teams which would work together to implement and design their online election database to make it functional, appealing and generate informative and insightful reports.  Six teams were created joining students from Irving High with Austin Middle School and joining students from MacArthur with Lamar Middle School.

The middle school students were assigned the first step in designing an Access database that would simulate the registration and voting process needed for the upcoming presidential election.  Part of the assignment was to consider the post-election results that would need to be evaluated by students in social studies, math and government classes.  Data collected could be sorted by gender, grade, campus, teacher or a variety of criteria.

High School students developed an active web page using the middle school database that would allow students to register for the presidential election and then return later to cast their vote.  Importance was placed on  collaboration with the middle schools,  design, ease of use, and following the election process.

All student (K-12) then participated in the voting process by completing a voter’s registration form and returning on Election Day to vote in the online election.  Over 22,000 students registered to vote by the October 31 deadline and over 18,000 of those registered voters returned to cast their ballot.

Post election results were evaluated by students in social studies, math and government classes. Data collected at the district level was compared with election results at the local, state and national levels.  Reports comparing data within the district, were generated by students, enabling them to make and establish connections to trends in the electoral process.
