Web 2.0

Although the term Web 2.0 suggests a new "version" of the World Wide Web, it does NOT refer to an update to any technical specifications or software, but to a change in the way end-users use the web.

Web 2.0 is a trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to facilitate creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services (such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies.)

The beauty of web 2.0 software is that they do not need to be installed, and they are readily available on the Internet. There is probably a web 2.0 application out there for just about anything and it is mostly free; sometimes more powerful than what is installed on our computers. Granted they are not all perfect, but what is listed below is top notch quality software. Our teachers and students can be productive without relying on particular brand of software. Web 2.0 is impacting technology fast and furiously and our students need to be savvy about how to harness its power. Here is a list of some you may already be familiar with:

  • Google Docs - word processing, spreadsheet, databases, and PowerPoint presentations (all online and free)

  • Delicious - your bookmarks online, anytime, and anywhere (all online and free)

  • Photoshop Express - load photos, share, distribute, and edit (all online and free)

Directory of Web 2.0 Resources

For your reference, below is a very important site to consider. The exhaustive list may be a bid slow to load on our network due to its massive list, but it is comprehensive. To list items by category, click on “Select Tag”. Happy hunting, and share what you learn.
