Be sure your child does a lot of reading. Children should be reading 15 to 20 minutes every day whether a new homework book is sent home or not. Beginning the second six weeks of school, I will be sending home two little books to read as homework. By the end of the year the children should have a large collection of little books that I have copied and sent home. They can read these, library books, or books they have at home.
We are looking for signs of spring by participating in the Internet projects Journey South. We will be waiting for symbolic paper butterflies to return from Mexico. We are tracking the progress of the Monarch migration on a large map of North America. We're waiting for the tulips we planted last fall to bloom. They have already emerged and are still very small.
We are finishing a research project about Monarchs using different sources for our information. We are putting what we learn into a classroom PowerPoint presentation.
We began our science unit on Measurement. We have been having fun learning about different ways we can measure objects. We have been learning to measure with non-standard units like spools, coffee stirrers, pencils, plastic spoons, and adding machine tape. We will be continuing working with addition and subtraction as well as learning more about place value, odd and even numbers, geometry, time, and money. We have talked about three dimensional objects and how we can remember the names of a cone, a cube, and a rectangular prism by thinking about an ice cream cone, an ice cube, and a rectangle and prism.
