This or That A simple game used for checking understanding/clarification/review/assessment. Can be used in many ways with all kinds of topics. There should be two options: this or that. (odd/even, fiction/nonfiction, true/false, healthy/unhealthy, fraction/whole number, renewable/nonrenewable, etc.) Designate an area for each side. Then call out a number/word/definition/example, or write on the board. Then students will have to pick a side for the answer and run to that side. They need to make a decision quick with in 3 sec. Not following their neighbor, but making their own decision. You can change the locomotor movement (Hop- one foot, skip, jump- two feet, walk, gallop, leap, run, jog, slide, crawl, wiggle, booty shuffle) EX: Odd will be here on the right, even will be here on the left. If the number was 5 students should run to the right side and wait. If there is any students that went to the wrong side you could clear up any misconceptions.
Games to help Review Musical chairs- each desk has a review page with several questions, students move around desks until music stops, they sit and answer the first question on review sheet, then continue until final person is left. Variations: have those that don’t find a seat be the police, monitoring who got the right answer, if you don’t get the answer right you are out. Also when all the questions have been answered, have each student go back to their own desk and see if all the answers are correct. If not, have them correct them. Stick Em’ Up- have students mill around, saying hello, shaking hands, being polite while playing music. Then when the music stops, all students put their hands up in the air, they need to find a partner who has their hands up and give each other high 5. Then they discuss the answer to a question the teacher asks. Once the answer has been given and discussed as a group, everyone mills around again playing music. When music stops everyone puts their hands up. This time they have to find a new partner.
Brain Breaks- Opposite 10 Math Tips (partners) Students stand in partners facing each other. One person is the leader, the other is the follower. Then switch jobs after a certain amount of time. The leader puts hands either both up, down, right or left. Then the leader needs to use their fingers to make a number from 0-10. The partner then put both hands the opposite direction with their fingers up to equal ten between them and their partner. EX: Leader has hands to right showing 4 fingers, partner needs to put hands to the left showing 6 fingers. Leader has hands up with 0 fingers (hands in a fist), partner needs to put hands down with 10 fingers
