Bilingual Debate
The debate over the
effectiveness of bilingual education distresses me very much personally. I
have had to defend my profession often. This is really very sad because
research has proven that well administered bilingual programs yield wonderful
results. What does, in fact, scare me is the idea of teaching under a
program that does not effectively teach my children English. Remember to

Let's tell the truth about bilingual education, a speech by Stephen Krashen. The truth
California continues to fail its English language learners. Supporters of English language immersion can play with test scores all they want. The simple fact is that what they promised has not been achieved. There is no learning of academic English in just one year as was told to them by supporters of bilingual education. But we were laughed at, ridiculed and told we had no expectations for students. Well, what these people don't have is compassion for those learning a new language. Academically, children are falling further and further behind. Let the children learn academics in the native language while they learn English. The answer is simple, but politically will not happen. With the new elections Massachusetts' citizens have fallen for the false hope of English immersion. See the Massachusetts page for details. However, Colorado continues to support bilingual education. Look at the Colorado page for more details. Here you can find a good article in Spanish that talks about what happened in both the states.

El debate sobre la eficacia de la educación bilingüe me apena mucho personalmente. He tenido que defender mi profesión muy a menudo.
