Language Testing Center
Upon enrollment for the first time to a Texas public or charter school, all students are required by the state to complete a Home Language Survey that will answer two questions [19TAC §89.1215 (b)]:
- What language is used most often in the home?
- What language is used most often by your child?
If the response to either question is a language other than English, the campus makes arrangements for a language testing appointment at the Language Testing Center. The student will be given PreLAS or LAS Links, the statewide approved English language proficiency test to determine English fluency. In PK, K and 1st grade, the student is evaluated in English listening and speaking. In grades 2 - 12, the student is evaluated in English in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The test results are provided to the student's campus to assist in decisions regarding appropriate English learner services to meet the language and academic needs of the student.
If the student does not meet the state established criteria for English proficiency, the student will be designated as an English Learner and the campus Language Proficiency Assessment Committee will recommend English learner services in either the bilingual or ESL program as appropriate, and obtain parent permission for placement.
The Language Testing Center is located at 820 N. O'Connor Rd, just south of Irving High School.
