Purpose of Adapted Physical Education (APE) Services

Each student with a disability must be afforded the opportunity to participate in the regular physical education program available to non-disabled student unless the student needs specially designed physical education (Adapted PE). Adapted PE is an individualized service comprised of developmental activities, games, sports, and rhythmical movements suited to the interests, capabilities, and limitations of students with disabilities who may or may not safely engage in the activities of a general physical education program. Instructional, consultative, and/or monitoring services are provided to students in the least restrictive environment for eligible students who demonstrate a gross motor need.

Adapted physical education instruction is specified in an individualized education program (IEP) and shall meet the standards of the TEKS.
