Since the school's opening in 2011 the Johnson Middle School orchestra has doubled in size. Students learn to play the violin, viola, ‘cello or the string bass in orchestra. Concerts and contests include Fall and Spring school concerts, UIL Concert and Sight reading Contest, IISD Solo and Small Ensemble Contest, Sandy Lake Music Festival, Pride of Texas Music Festival as well as performances at the IISD Board Meetings and other venues. Since 2011, the JMS Orchestra has earned four top Sweepstakes ratings and many other First Division and Outstanding ratings for their performances.
