The District Improvement Committee’s primary purpose is to advise district administration in the planning, operating, supervising and evaluating of the district’s educational program. 

The duties of the District Improvement Committee include:

• attend all scheduled meetings and be a willing participant;
• being involved in establishing and reviewing the district’s educational plans, goals, performance objectives and major classroom instructional programs;
• addressing all pertinent federal planning requirements;
• assisting district administration annually in preparing, reviewing and revising the District Improvement Plan;
• holding one public meeting annually, after receipt of district-level performance report, to discuss district performance and district performance objectives;
• advising district staff regarding the district’s discipline management program, including the Student Code of Conduct;
• advising administration regarding districtwide staff development plans, waivers to the Texas Education Agency and textbook adoptions.

The District Improvement Committee meets four times a year. The District also provides orientation for new members.

The DIC is made up of 47 members, which includes:

• Parents (10 members)
• Community (4 members)
• Business (4 members)
• High School Students (9 members)
• District Professionals (20 members – teachers, counselors, administration)

Student members shall serve a one-year term. All other members of the District Improvement Committee shall serve a two-year term. 

Nominations for new members are submitted annually from mid-May to the end of July through the District Improvement Committee Member application. Anyone who is not selected for membership on the committee could remain in the applicant pool and may be selected to fill committee vacancies based on the Superintendent and Board appointments. Notifications will be sent out by the end of August to all applicants regarding the selection status and scheduled meeting dates and times planned throughout the year. 

The District Improvement Plan (DIP) is a one-year plan that guides the district and staff in the improvement of student performance for all student groups in order to attain state standards with respect to achievement indicators.

The first step in developing the District Improvement Plan is conducting a Comprehensive Needs Assessment. A large portfolio of data is reviewed, including attendance, enrollment, achievement, discipline, and school climate, to identify the district's greatest strengths and critical areas for improvement. A list of targeted strategies is developed to address the greatest areas of need. The effectiveness of each strategy is monitored against a one-year performance objective that is connected to one of the long-term district goals.
