About Our Superintendent Emeritus
Magda A. Hernández
Magda A. Hernández began serving as Superintendent Emeritus for Irving ISD on July 1, 2026, following nearly eight years as Superintendent of Schools and more than 30 years of dedicated service to the district. She will serve in an advisory capacity through her retirement in December 2026.
Hernández was named Superintendent of Schools in December 2018 after a distinguished career that began in Irving ISD in 1993 as a bilingual aide. After earning her teaching degree from Texas Woman's University (TWU), she served as a bilingual and gifted and talented teacher at Good and Townley elementary schools before being promoted to assistant principal at Townley. She later joined the Administration Building, where she served as Human Resources Staffing and Recruiting Coordinator, Director of Human Resources, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Associate Superintendent of Human Resources and Deputy Superintendent of Administrative Services.
Hernández also served as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources in Waxahachie ISD. She earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in educational administration, graduating cum laude from Texas Woman’s University, and holds superintendent certification from the University of North Texas.
Throughout her tenure as Superintendent, Hernández led the district through significant growth and transformation while maintaining a steadfast commitment to student success, employee wellbeing and organizational excellence. Her leadership helped expand academic opportunities, modernize district facilities and prioritize the health and wellness of employees, students and families.
Hernández serves on the boards of Texas Workforce Solutions and Texas Academic Decathlon and is president of the Texas School Alliance.
She is the proud mother of three Irving ISD graduates - two sons and one daughter - and grandmother of six, including two grandchildren who attend Irving ISD. She enjoys reading, traveling, music and spending time with her family.
On February 26, 2024, the Irving ISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name the district's professional learning and wellness center in her honor. Throughout her time as superintendent, Hernández emphasized the importance of employee wellbeing, including launching the district's "Self-care isn't selfish—it's necessary" campaign in 2020.
Her vision to create a first-of-its-kind facility dedicated to learning, wellness and healing became a reality through the Magda A. Hernández Institute of Wellness and Professional Learning, which continues to provide professional learning and wellness opportunities for employees, students and Irving ISD families, helping to establish her legacy in Irving ISD.
