Asthma

Students with asthma are supported at school through proper planning and communication. Parents are asked to provide an annual Asthma Action Plan, signed by both the student’s healthcare provider and parent, and any required Asthma Medication Authorization Forms to the school nurse. These forms help ensure students receive safe and timely care during the school day.

Texas law allows students with asthma to carry and self‑administer prescribed asthma medication at school or school‑related activities when specific requirements are met. The school nurse reviews the Asthma Action Plan each year and assesses the student’s ability to recognize symptoms and properly use their medication.

Parents should be aware that schools do not keep a general emergency supply of asthma medication. Unless a backup inhaler or medication is provided to the nurse’s office, students who are approved to self‑carry are responsible for keeping their medication with them at all times. For students participating in athletics, the school nurse works with families and coaches to ensure asthma medication is readily available and used safely.
